« on: Sunday 03 May 09 07:39 BST (UK) »
Hi All.

I wondered if anyone could tell me if they can find the Maris Family who
lived in England (Cambs) arriving in Australia in the early 1830-40's.

Hi Sandy,
Now, as you would probably know by the number of postings you have made on the R. Chat boards, helpers need a bit of detailed information to work withif they are to make a successful search.

Perhaps you can kindly give a bit more ;D

Hi Sandy,

John MARIS married male immigrant, arrived Sydney 25 Mar 1841  as an assisted immigrant aboard the SUSAN brought out by Nicholas James and Co. He was a native of Linton Cambridge, son of John a Collar Maker and Catherine Cochrane. He was a shepherd. Age at embarkation  was 32. (11 Dec 1840) Person certifying baptism was Charles GRAIN assistant Curate. Person certifying Character was Samuel Claydon and another. Health, strength and probably usefulness - very good. He was Protestant and could read and write reasonably.

Rebecca MARIS married female immigrant, was a native of West (Fratson)? Cambridgeshire, parents Benjamin HOWARD, dead and ?(Looks like Mart on one line - end of line then Mash on next line - don't know - best I can come up with is maybe two attempts at writing Martha  :-\ first line looks like ran out of room but second line looks like Mash ) anyway she was also dead.  She was a domestic servant. She was aged 33 years in March 1840. Person certifying baptism J H Watson Vicar. Person certifying Character, same as husband. Health, strength and probably usefulness - very Good. Religion Protestant. She could read

Charles MARIS aged 4  Person certifying baptism was Charles GRAIN assistant Curate 18 July 1840
Matilda MARIS aged 8 Person certifying baptism was Charles GRAIN assistant Curate 7 Apr 1840
Sarah Ann MARIS 1 Person certifying baptism was Charles GRAIN assistant Curate 28 Nov 1840

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Sue/Kriss.

Sorry not to have been more helpful.   :(

I mostly answer requests, rather than ask.

Kriss has certainly got the correct family.

I only have a genealogy report for the family, (although it is huge).

I do know that John Maris (father) married Catherine Cockerton.

Rebecca was from West Wratting, there was no mention of her father so thank you Kris for that.

I have quite a few more children being born in Ashfied and Tambaroora, NSW.

When I have pieced together the detailed information I require I will post more.

Thank you both for replying, greatly appreciated.

Sandy

Hi,

I have some information on Richard John Maris whom I think was the first child born in Australia to this family.  His first wife died in Cobar and he married Mary Annie Allwood (nee Moore) in Bourke about 1884.  It was a bigamous marriage on her part as her husband John Joseph Allwood was still alive.

Hi Andcarred.

I wondered if you would like to P.M. me about the family you have listed.

I would be interested in them as I do have Richard as a son.

Hi Seahall,

Richard Maris was the son of  John and Rebecca Maris and was born at Five Dock Farm  in New South Wales.  He was baptised 15 August 1841 at St Johns Church at Ashfield.  Richard parents were immigrants from Linton, Cambridge, England, his mother was pregnant with him on the voyage out to New South Wales in 1841 on the ship "Susan". Richard was born 29 Jun 1841 at Five Dock Farm, three months after they arrived.

I have sent a pm.

Hi Andcarred.  :)

Thank you for listing the family for me with more details.

The known link I am working from is through John and Catherine's
(Cockerton) son Richard of 1822, brother to John of 1810 who sailed to Australia.

Thanks also for P.M. now replied also.
