« on: Friday 01 May 09 21:26 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of the Barnsley family of farmers in Bletchley, Bucks in the middle 1700s.  An Elizabeth Barnsley, farmer's daughter of Bletchley, married a Percival Chandler of Soulbury, Bucks, at Soulbury on 31 December 1753.

From my ancestry cd which has Soulbury marriages
Percival Chandler, farmer's son, of S., & Elizab. Barsley, farmer's daughter, of Bletchley, ban.  31 Dec 1753.  My Phillimores cd of Bucks marriages also has this entry with this spelling.

Couldn't find any more Barsleys on either cd although variations on surname may be Basley, Baslie etc and there are one or two of those but no obvious link.

Fenny Stratford Baptism
05 Jul 1759 John, the Son of Humphrey & Elizth. Basley.
11 Apr 1762 Elizth., D. of Humphrey & Elizth. Basley.
05 Jun 1780 Thomas, son of William & Jane Basley.

I don't know whether your Chandlers could fit in with some of this disreputable bunch!
Christmas Sessions Chepping Wycomb 1686-87:
Richard Chandler, senior, Richard Chandler, junior, and John Chandler, all of Drayton Parslowe, for rioting and for assaulting Thomas Chandler.
George Chandler, and his brother Richard, Thomas Chandler, and Anthony Kemp, all of Drayton Parslowe, for rioting and for assaulting Richard Chandler, senior.
George Chandler, Richard Chandler, junior, and Thomas, his brother, and Anthony Kemp fined £1 each for riot and assault.
Recognizances entered into.
Richard Chandler, senior, Richard Chandler, junior, and John Chandler, all of Drayton Parslowe, gunsmiths, and Thomas Pawley of Weston Turvile, yeoman, in £20 each, to appear and answer.

Epiphany Session 1687-88
Richard Chandler, senior, of Drayton Parslowe, for assaulting Robert Willison, for assaulting Samuel Fenner, constable, in the execution of his duty, and for a breach of the peace.
Richard Chandler of Wing, for receiving inmates.
Richard Chandler, senior, of Drayton Parslowe, for the offences given above.
Richard Chandler, junior, of Drayton Parslowe, for a breach of the peace

Easter Session 1688
Richard Chandler, senior, of Draighton Parslowe, bellfounder, forfeits three recognizances of £20 each for non-appearance.

Midsummer Session 1689
Richard Chandler, junior, fined 6s. 8d. for rioting and for assaulting Thomas Chandler.
Richard Chandler, junior, fined 6s. 8d., for assaulting Richard Chandler, senior.

Despite all the above I also have references to Richard Chandler actually serving as petty constable and as a juror.  Must've been a larger than life character.

Michaelmas Session 1690
William Chandler of Walton, for refusing to go with a pass.
William Chandler of Walton in Aylesbury, for refusing to go with a pass to convey cripples away.

In 1700 there are refs to William Chandler County baker and payments he received but in 1702
both in the Weight and Bakeing of the County Bread, which upon examination in Court is confirmed," Chandler was dismissed and Joseph Nash of Aylesbury appointed in his place.

From Midsummer Sessions 1689
Hollendon in Soulbury Percival Chandler and John Hopkins vice Bernard Collins and Humphrey Pantline.

recognisances discharged 1693:
..... and Percival Chandler, all of Soulbury, yeoman, ....

Not exactly the info you wanted but hope you find it useful or perhaps a clue to something more.

Thank you, Steph, for taking the trouble to reply at such length to my query about Percival Chandler and Elizabeth Barnsley or Barsley who married at Soulbury on 31 Dec 1753.  I originally found this marriage in the Soulbury register.  It is possible that I made a mistake in copying it so I would like to know which version of the name is actually there. If it is fairly easy for you to check which spelling is present in the register I would be most grateful for that help.
I already have most of the the information you sent about the Chandlers.  Unfortunately Percival was a name in very common use by the family and there were, in the 17th century, often several around at the same time.  Sorting them all out provided quite a challenge.  Mostly they were
farmers or yeomen who left wills, without which I could not have succeeded.
The Percival named above was a descendant of an Alice Chandler who died a widow in 1556.  The text in my file relating to this (including transcripts of wills) occupies 17 A4 pages but I also have a tree diagram summarizing it all on a single page.  I tried to attach this diagram to the present message but found that rootsweb does not permit attachments in WORD format, i.e. files with the .doc extension which is what I use.
If this information would be of interest to you will you please send an ordinary email to me - (*) so that I can reply together with attachment(s) as normal.  And would you like just the tree diagram or the whole lot?
Look forward to hearing from you,  Ronald

Hi
Barsley is the actual spelling in the Phillimore's Marriage transcripts which I have on CD and also on the ancestry CD.  My Phillimores is basically a digitized version of the original book.

No need to send me Barsley details, they are not in my tree but as I had Soulbury marriage regs I did a look up for you as a 'return favour' for all those on rootschat who have looked up for me in the past.
