Solomon Haywood - born circa 1828 Wetton

Hi,

I am looking for information on how to trace my gt-gt-gt grandfather Solomon Haywood born abt 1828, so far I have traced him through the censuse to 1841 where it states his age as 13 living in Wetton with a Hannah Haywood aged 65 a Farmer, both born in County. Now from the censuses it would seem this is where he was born, I know he married Sarah Robinson on 17th Feb 1851 in All Saints, Grindon, the problem I have is finding out who his parents were, I have a copy of the marriage certificate and it gives his fathers name as a Thomas Boulden, so I was a little taken aback by this. How do I find out who his parents were with limited info.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Can you please give more information from Solomon's wedding certificate?

E.g. names of witnesses; father Thomas Boulden's occupation; addresses - if any given - of Solomon and Sarah; respective occupations of Solomon and Sarah.

Solomon Haywood, Bachelor, residence Grindon, Profession Labourer, Fathers Name Thomas Boulden occupation Labourer also.
Sarah Robinson, Spinster, residence looks like Musden Grange, Father Job Robinson, occupation Labourer.
The witnesses are Olive Robinson and George Chadwick.

Unfortunately the details from the Marriage Certificate don't seem to take us much further forward!

Olive Robinson was presumably Sarah's sister and George Chadwick was Olive's "intended" (or at the time Sarah married, Olive's "actual"!)

For the Haywoods and Thomas Boulden the IGI doesn't seem to offer any data, nor do the various on-line parish records on Ancestry, FindMyPast, FreeReg, etc.

So it seems that the only clue at the moment is Hannah Haywood who was probably related to Solomon (perhaps his grandmother?).

I have been unable to find Hannah in the 1851 Census so it is possible that she died 1841-1851. It is a bit of a “long shot” but it might be worth trying to get the death certificate for Hannah as the name of the informant could be useful.

From 1837 to 1869 Wetton, Staffs was in the Leek Registration District (from 1869 it was in Ashborne) but there is no death In Leek Reg. Dist. for a Hannah Haywood (or Heywood) on FreeBMD between 1841-1851. However there is a death for a Hannah Hayward as follows:

Deaths Mar 1843   
HAYWARD  Hannah     Leek  17 45   

(It is possible that the name has been entered incorrectly in the GRO Index).

Thank you very much for your help and pointing me in another direction as to how to try and get around my problem.

I think I am going to have to travel down to Staffordshire and search the Parish records for Wetton to see if I can find a birth entry for Solomon to find out who his parents are sometime in the future.
