Letitia Ann Freeman & her Mother Sophia
« on: Thursday 30 April 09 13:10 BST (UK) »
This is the "concrete" info I have--Letitia Ann Freeman was married on 5th Nov 1824 in Lambston Pembrokeshire to a John Robinson, I have marr Cert. She died on 24 Dec 1872 age 73, in Churchill Somerset  born c1799, I have death cert. I also have the will of her brother John Trelawny Freeman that states his parents were Sophia & John Freeman of Pembrokeshire. Will dated 1854-- also his death record is 1854. The insertion of Trelawny in his name adds weight to the fact that---
On IGI there is a record that states that Sophia Trelawny b. c1753 marries a John Freeman on 15 Jun 1801  possibly in St Ann's Church Soho.

Sophia Trelawny's parents lived in Soho Sq London & were buried in that church which was bombed in WW2.
I have the Will of Gen Harry Trelawny, dated 1813 in which he mentions his daughter Sophia, but not that she was married. She received an inheritance.
Can anyone tell me how to get the marriage record for Sophia Trelawny & John Freeman or perhaps the baptism record for her daughter Letitia Ann---- I would have thought the church in Soho would have stored their records somewhere safe. Also if I could find the baptism record of Letitia this should confirm her dates & parents

Trying to reason this through it looks as if Sophia does not marry until until she is 48yrs old & then has 2 children.
Letitia also seems to have received an inheritance but I can find no Wills for her parents.
Any helpful suggestions will be most appreciated.

Sophia Freeman is very unlikely to have had two children after the age of 48.

She is still living in 1841 - in Lambston, Pembrokeshire. Age recorded as 75, which (allowing for rounding down to nearest 5) would mean she was born c1761-1766, so around 34-40 when she married in 1801.

I notice that although the IGI has an entry for the marriage extracted from local records, the birth date is an entry submitted by an LDS member, who has simply guessed it as 'about 1753'.  This may be based only on the fact that her parents married in 1752. (The marriage of Henry Trelawney and Mary Dormer at Grosvenor Chapel, Mayfair in 1752 is on Boyd's Marriage Index).

There is a death of Sophia Freeman registered in Haverfordwest district (which includes Lambston) in 1847.

Records for St Ann Soho are held at City of Westminster Archives:

A report of the marriage appeared in The Morning Chronicle Wednesday 24th June 1801

MARRIED

On th 15th inst. at St Ann's Westminster, J.L. Freeman esq., of Crickmailyn, Pembrokeshire, to Miss Sophia Trelawney, second daughter of the late Gen. Trelawney.

Interesting that Sophia's father appears to be deceased in 1801.

Thank you so much Galium-- your help is invaluable. No one in the Trelawny family believed there was a Sophia.
I will order her death certifcate. I am really very excited.
Many Thanks

Galium-- can you tell me please how do you find the marriage announcement in The Morning Chronicle for Sophia & John. I would like to print it, if that is allowed, to prove to everyone that Sophia exists.
Thanks Vesta

Galium
Thank you for my personal message. I do live in the U.K in a south London borough. I will enquire at the local library, but if they do not have the service I will take you up on the kind offer. I now would also like to find the marriage record of Agnes Ann, Sophia's sister  to---I believe to a John Jervis.
I appreciate your help

Boyd's Marriage Index shows John JERVIS marrying Ann Agnes TRELAWNY at St Mary Abbots. Kensington in 1779. Boyd's doesn't give exact dates, unfortunately.

However, both Sophia and Ann Agnes' marriages were by licence, and appear on the Faculty Office Licence Allegations index.  The index is held at the Lambeth Palace Library, and at the Society of Genealogists Library(14 Charterhouse Buildings, Goswell Road, London ) - I believe you can buy copies of the licence allegations at either place.

If you want to know more about licence allegations and what they contain:

Hope this helps.

I don't know if you've come across this resource:

http://www2.swansea.gov.uk/_info/cambrian/

but if not, I see there is a possible  announcement for the death of Sophia Freeman - although she is named only as 'the Lady of John Freeman Esq. of East Hook', and also of John's death in 1849, as well as Letitia Ann's marriage in 1824.
