Advice on an occupation please!
« on: Wednesday 29 April 09 19:10 BST (UK) »
Hello there

I have a Frances Davison baptised 6 Oct 1782 in NCL All Saints: her fathe was William Davison, Engineman.

I looked through all of the other Davison baptisms on either side of this one for 10 years on each side and I could not find any other William whose occupation was described this way.

The other options for them were: Mariner / Gardener / Yeoman / Waterman / Grocer

Would Engineman tie in with any of these others?

Frances' first marriage was in Jarrow in 1803 and the second was in All Saints in 1807 so maybe the Davisons moved across the river and there is only one baptism in that parish.

I'm really keen to find out who her mother was.

Thanks in advance

Ashley

 Ashley,

"Engineman" would not necessarily tie in with any of the occupations listed.

William probably worked a "standing" rather than "locomotive" steam engine, used for pumping, pulling, lifting etc.

Does the All Saints baptism not record her mother's name ?

Unfortunately that batch on the IGI is inconsistent.  Frances's baptism only records her father's name. However, there are a few bpts in the broad time frame at All Saints that have father William Davison. Mothers are shown as either Margaret Moody or Ann Peel.

Worth following up  :-\

Frances second marriage was to a William Robson

Their children's names were William, Elizabeth, Robert, Frances, Joseph, Sarah, Ellen, and John

I'll try to find if she had any children to Thomas Softly her first husband.

I`ve not seen the original parish records. However, some Durham Bishops Transcripts are online at:

In particular, DUR BTs for All Saints, NuT (image 146 of 348)

Hello Mgnv

Welcome to Rootschat.  Many thanks for taking time to look that one up on the BTs site.

I've been through a transcript of the original registers and checked every Davison baptism with father named William from 1770 to 1800, and Frances is the only one whose father was an Engineman.  I was hoping to find that some of the others might be linked so that I would know what her mother's name was.

Maybe they switched parishes - I'll have to check some of the others.
