Hi
Have you got a name and or regiment for him?
MM s were gazetted in the London Gazette available to search online however citations for MMs are very rare in it you usually just get a list of names. His Medal Index Card may give which edition the list appears.
Unit War Diaries may give a reason but usually ive found the best source is a local newspaper report about it.

If we can get a name we can begin to help.If you have the medals his number and regiment should be impressed in the rim.

Hi
Heres his campaign medal index card...cant find his MM Card on Ancestry it may not be uploaded but its on NA site for £2.
He didnt deploy overseas til after Jan 1916 and was entitled to British War and Victory Medals plus MM.
Im sure one of the LG experts will be able to find the gazette entry for you on here :)

Looks like his MM was awarded whilst with Royal Fusiliers and then he transferred to MGC sometime later.

Ady :)

Just to add to Ady's already indepth reply....
citations for MMs are very rare in it you usually just get a list of names.

The citation for the MM was presented with the medal and copies were not kept, by the military.  It's just possible that you may come across the recommendation for the medal amongst the Regimental Archives, which will tell you why the medal was awarded, or as Ady said the local papers may have covered it.
