Military records
« on: Tuesday 28 April 09 01:05 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandfather was killed in WW1 and I'm trying to get some information. The problem is, his name was Thomas Brown and he was killed on 22nd April 1916 but there are 3 Thomas Browns listed as having been killed on that same day and I don't know which one is him. Does anyone have any tips on how to find out which one is my ancestor? None of the deaths recorded on www.cwgc.org have any details of age, family or any means of identifying the individual

You can view the service records on Anc***ry for free until April 30 (I think).  Did you try there?  Might help to determine if he's one of the three you have mention of.

Hi Annapet,

If you search for Thomas on the Scottish National War Memorial [www.snwm.org]. it lists the three as:

BROWN Thomas, 2545, THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLANDERS), Cpl born Carluke
BROWN Thomas, S/11241, THE SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS, Pte born Sunderland
BROWN Thomas, S/8473, THE SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS, Pte born Barony, Glasgow

The birthplaces might be helpful, if you have this information to check against.

Best wishes

Hi Annapet,

Can you give us your ggf's birth details, date and location, if possible. I tried Thomas Brown, and got about 1000 results on Ancestry.
