Skewbald: You are the best!  Thanks so much for your efforts, and for the p.m. which has been very useful indeed.  If I don't find the Jones family to return the photographs to, I shall 'adopt' them mentally and put them in the family binders which I am creating, so that they are never forgotten.  In the meantime, we will 'soldier' on.  Thanks again.

No, they are not family but their photographs were in the family collection and the writing on them is my mother's, which would suggest they were family friends.  I know of so many people who would love photos of their ancestors and it seems a shame that I cannot (yet!) reunite this family.  Still, as I said, I shall love them as my own until the blood connection is made.

Oh, I forgot - look under 'Two Derbyshire Soldiers' and you'll see their pics and my search history through this medium!   :)

Thanks, everyone:  We have identified both men - and they ARE from my family or a branch of it.  William was in the RNVR and died just 17 days before his brother.  They are both buried in France and we believe their names will definitely be in the Derby Roll of Honour as we now know the family was there in 1911.  Another page closed.
