SIMPSONs of Kaiapoi *Completed* - thanks
« on: Sunday 26 April 09 05:05 BST (UK) »
I have found a connection to Kaiapoi with a William Simpson settling in Cam Road after coming from Scotland on the ship "Crusader" 1883. He came over with his wife Rachel (nee Bannister), 2 of his 3 children (Gilbert & Isabella) and mother Mary (nee Shanks).

William (b. abt 1856 Scotland) was a warper at the Woollen Mills and heavily involved in the K.W.M.C.

Gilbert (b. abt 1879, Scotland) was an oarsman during 1897-1901 with Arthur Driscoll. He also was connected with the Boer War.

Isabella (b. abt 1880, Scotland) was a foundation member of the Hinemoa Hockey Team.

Another son, James Bannister Simpson (b. 30Nov1921 Kaiapoi) was too connected with the Boer War. He first married a Lillian May Vogel about 1904. After her death in 1910 he then married a Jessie May Bedford in Christchurch 22Sep1911 but settled in Kaiapoi. I descend from this union.

I believe William & Rachel were buried at a Kaiapoi Cemetery tho have not found any online lookups to confirm that. I would love to know what happened to Gilbert and Isabella. I know they were still alive at the death of Rachel 03Nov1921 as her death certificate states Gilbert to be 42yrs and Isabella 41yrs, James 37yrs. I have not managed to track down where James and Jessie were buried. I have no date of death for William. James died abt 1954

If anyone can help with information on any of the above Simpson's I would be most grateful.

Hi Jazzie,

Welcome to Rootschat :)

Rachel and William are both at Kaiapoi Public Cemetery.  Gilbert is also buried there he died 1947 aged 74.

Williams death date is 1944 aged 89.

You could perhaps write to the cemetery for the death dates.

Hope this little bit helps.

Cheers

Hi again,

Archives NZ hold a probate for Gilbert:

http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?OID=4596933

If you can't get to Archives yourself, you could post another topic, asking if someone will do a look up for you.

Cheers
KHP :)

Added  There is one for William as well.

Hi,

This is James' Probate, you should be able to get a death date from that.   There is another James Bannister Simpson died 1984 up in Purewa Cemetery, any relation?

There is also a Military Personnel File at Archives for James.

Looks like the James Bannister Simpson buried in Purewa could be Gilberts son.

James born 4 May 1906 admitted  20 Feb 1912 to Lyttelton School.  Living at that time Ticehurst Rd.

There is a birth entry on the BMD Historical records:

http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/search/

Gilbert married a Alice Maud Baker 1904 Folio #1214, but of course all of this will need to be verified.

kiwihalfpint,
Blimey fast work with what you came up with - I'm impressed.  The info surrounding what could be Gilbert's son is very interesting and I will see if I can verify that more. Same with the marriage. You don't happen to know if that Alice Baker was buried in Kaiapoi also?

newbe,
Thanks for the welcome and I would be grateful if you have access to the microfiche for Kaiapoi Public Cemetery. kiwihalfpint has enlightened me with a few dates so if you are able to scan for those and any of the names mentioned would be great.

Hi,

No, but not every death is recorded, no doubt Newbe will check that for you, when doing the other look up.

Getting the probates might give you other information as well.

Cheers
