LALLY family - LOUGHREA
« on: Saturday 25 April 09 01:43 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find any information on the LALLY family from Loughrea in the early to mid 1800s. I will outline what I know and hopefully someone might be able to fill in a few blanks for me.

My g-g-grandmother, Mary Ann LALLY and her sister, Margaret, were part of the Irish orphan scheme and travelled to Australia in 1849 aboard the ship, Inchinnan. The girls' parents were Martin and Eliza of Loughrea who were both deceased. The girls had been in the workhouse but I have no idea for how long. At the time of departure, Mary Ann is stated to be 16 years of age and Margaret, 14 years. I don't know how accurate these ages are.. I believe the girls could have been a bit younger than this.

Then, ten years later, in 1859, their brother John LALLY (20 years of age) travelled to Australia aboard the ship, Annie Wilson. John had been living at Abbeyville.

I am hoping that as the girls were part of a migration scheme there may be some records of them and perhaps their parents and possible other siblings.

If anyone has any information or can direct me as to how I might find out anything else, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks

Hi

I'm afraid that civil registeration only started in Ireland in 1864 . However if you can discover the place of birth - Abbeyville ! and see if you can trace the Church records then maybe you might get someplace . Try the East galway Family Heritage Centre at Woodford for the Church Records !

Anne
My Lally ancestors came from Loughrea to England (London) at about the same time.  Because I have so few details of them I have been unable to follow them up in Loughrea.  But I have recorded these two girls, Anne & Margaret, as an example of the state they were in at that time, perhaps as an illustration of why my family left home.  Also, because Loughrea was a small place with few Lallys I have assumed that Anne & Margaret were related to my family or, at least, they knew each other.  After a break I now plan to restart my Lally searches in Ireland, perhaps visiting next year.   I would hope to find out as much as I can about all the Lallys in Loughrea.
So I can't give you any help now but would appreciate knowing if you've found out any more since you posted this request in April.  And if we keep in touch I may be able to find more about Anne & Margaret in the next year.
Best wishes
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Good to hear from you. I haven't been able to find out much at all about the Lally girls, Mary Ann and Margaret, in Ireland... or their parents.  All I know is that the 2 girls are recorded as being in the workhouse following their parents' deaths and were then selected to travel to Australia as part of the Irish Orphan Scheme. Here is a link to the website explaining the scheme : http://www.irishfaminememorial.org/default.htm

I hadn't even realised there was a brother, John,  until I was doing some research on the family here in Australia and came upon his marriage then immigration records. It is possible that there were other siblings who didn't come to Australia - maybe your ancestors are amongst them... and that branch moved to England. I don't imagine the poor souls had much choice over where they went. There were quite possibly other children in the workhouse but the Irish orphan Scheme only wanted single girls of marriageable age to travel here to Australia.

I have tried various on-line records and databases and have come across a few Lallys from the area but have no idea who they are or who they are connected to.

I would love to know if you find out any more information about the Lallys in Ireland - particularly, my branch, but would still be interested in knowing about any of them because as you commented Loughrea is not a big town so there is a good chance that they are all connected.

I will certainly keep in touch with you if I find out anything more. I know I am not able to give my personal e-mail address here but once I figure out how to send it to you, will do so.

Kind Regards,
Sandra
