William Blakey, Baptism look up 1802
« on: Friday 24 April 09 19:59 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with William Blakey. According to the census records i have found for william, he was born in Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland around 1802. However i havent been able to find a birth record for him.

His marriage does not say who his parents were.

I have found a record on Ancestry and also the same record on IGI for a william blakey christened in All saints, Newcastle, Northumberland in 1801. But Im not sure how to take this as i believe that it was quite a distance to Newcastle from Berwick. I would have to ask myself why would someone travel so far to have their child baptised there....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Katrina

 Katrina,

Where was he married ?

Berwick to Newcastle about 60 long miles on a bumpy road.  And Berwick itself had a wide range of churches of different religious denominations.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the reply. William was married in St Hilda's in South Shields, but lived in Tynemouth with his wife, dorothy in all the census records i have for him.

Ok... Can see William/Dorothy on censuses

Can also see another William Blakey about 1 year old than "your" William. This William a Waterman, with wife Jane was born in Newcastle.

He is a good candidate for the Newcastle baptism ?

Ah right...

The occupation for my william is a master mariner in the 51/61 census, i cant tell what his occupation was in the 41 census.. there just seems to be a line through that section of the record.

The william you mentioned does seem a better candidate for the newcastle record..

Im not sure where to look now for my william

thanks Michael,

Katrina

 Katrina,

His children were baptised in Warkworth parish ??   What religion.

Have you looked for his baptism in every church in Berwick upon Tweed ?

Hi Michael,

Williams first child, James, was baptised in Tynemouth in Christ Church on 13th nov. 1836. I havent been able to find a baptism record for their second child yet, Mary Ann. But believe she was born in Amble, Northumberland. Their last two children that i know about were both born in Warkworth according to the census records i have for them. Again, i dont have any baptism records for either.

From the census records, it seems that William and Dorothy moved around tynemouth quite a bit as each census has them living in a different area.

1841: residence in warkworth
1851: residence in Amble
1861: residence in Tynemouth
1871: residence in north shields.

As for looking up william in the parish records for berwick... i havent been able to find any online. I dont know what parish he was from, or what church.

Unfortunately i dont have any means to get hold of the records either. I was hoping that someone on here might be able to help me if at all possible?

 Katrina,

I think that everyone who responds on this message board are trying to help
the one who poses the query.

However sometimes the potential helper seeks a wee bit more info to facilitate the answer.

Berwick upon Tweed was ONE parish ( In that era the word "Parish" means only an Anglican/Church of England area, with one parish church within the parish territory). So if he was an Anglican ( Chtist Church was Anglican ! ) he likely would have been baptised in Berwick upon Tweed Parish Church.

So William was born in Berwick upon Tweed, wasa married, then had child in Tynemouth area, then had children in Amble/warkworth ( Amble lay within the Parish of Warkworth) then went back to Tynemouth ?

Until Later

Hi Michael,

I apologise if i havent mentioned the information needed to help me with my problem. I dont know much about the history of Berwick upon Tweed, only that it is on the border between Scotland and England and has had much debate over which country it actually belongs to. I was hoping that the parish records would be in the Durham Bishop Transcripts like other areas of Tynemouth and Durham are. However i have had no luck in finding a section particularly for Berwick.

I am also not informed enough over parishes and their areas so please forgive my confusion of not knowing that Berwick upon Tweed is a parish in its own right.

So William was born in Berwick upon Tweed, wasa married, then had child in Tynemouth area, then had children in Amble/warkworth ( Amble lay within the Parish of Warkworth) then went back to Tynemouth ?

Yes. The census records showed william to be born in Berwick upon Tweed. He married Dorothy Cuthbertson in St. Hilda's in South Shields, 21st feb 1824. There are no comments on the record i have for this marriage as to either participants parents. The witnesses were William Jamerson and John Campbell. As mentioned in my previous post, he then moved to Tynemouth where James was baptised, then to Warkworth, then to Amble, then back to tynemouth and then to North Shields.
