 K,

A wee snippet on Berwick upon Tweed and the Scotland or England issue... that was settled as long ago as 1400s. But there followed a period when Berwick upon Tweed was deemed to be separate from boths countries.

But in the era relevant to your research it was in the county of Northumberland, England.

Katrina,

As for looking up william in the parish records for berwick... i havent been able to find any online.

Some extracted records are on the I.G.I.........have you discounted William Blakey born 9th May 1802 and baptised 30th May 1802 at Berwick on Tweed? Seems a good match to me.

The only record i have come across on IGI was the one in my first post..

Is there any chance you can tell me what you entered in the search to find him please?

Hi again Jenb,

Thanks for finding that record for me!!

Going off track a little, I was just wondering how i would be able to connect this record to my william as i do not have any record of his parents anywhere. It isnt even mentioned in the durham transcripts where i got the marriage from..

Would it be possible to check the parish records in South Shields or would they just tell me the same information as the durham transcripts?

Thanks again,

By 'transcripts' do you mean the Durham Bishops Transcripts available at Family Searchlabs?

I think it's most doubtful that you would find anything on the original that wasn't on the Bishops Transcript.

I was thinking as much, but was hoping there was a way around it lol!

Thanks for the information again.

Im presuming from now on, everything will be circumstantial upon whether it fits or not as i wont be able to confirm who William's parents are.

 K,

This business of considering candidates , eliminating the "wrong" ones and hopefully "inking-in" the "right" ones, is normal for us all.

I assume you worked your way backwards from present-day back to your target William Blakey, who you knew from corroborative evidence that he was born in Berwick upon Tweed circa 1803.

So you target his baptism and consider a candidate baptism in Newcastle., but rightly question the distance separating Berwick and Newcastle.

But we discover two similar William Blakeys in Northumberland censuses, one born Newcastle living in Newcastle, , the other born Berwick-u-T living in North Shields.

Then Jennifer finds a William Blakey birth/baptism, in Berwick upon Tweed, son of William Blakey and Mary Riley,

As there only seems to be two candidates from censuses for William Blakey, one born /baptised Newcastle and the other born/baptised Berwick... and your target was Berwick-born.. then Bob's your Uncle !
