Photo Dating Please :)

Hi rootschatters and restorers,

Could anybody please share some opinion as to the date that this photograph was taken? I believe it to be somewhere in Scotland (accurate Iknow ). I do not feel comfortable making an accurate guess myself but would assumethat is id late nineteenth century. I was sent this picture by a relative and sadl we do not know who the people in the picture are but I think the ldy appears in anoter that I have, only older. I am guessing she is the mother of the two boys pictured. I think the boy sitting down is not a lot younger than me. I'd go ape if my mum tried to dress me like that Was this dress of the working class or middle class? It is obviously their best frock although I am not sure about the lady.

Hi Matt 

I'll put a first bid in for the first decade of the 20th century, given the woman's clothing and length of skirt . This became shorter towards the end of the decade so 1900-1905 maybe.

It's either that period or late 1880s but I think, on balance, it's the later date.

I have made a start on the picture, although have to go out now, so am unable to finish it at the moment. Will do some more on it when I get back, which should be this afternoon. Sorry I couldnt get it done now, but Ill be as quick as possible

Hi Matt 

I'd go along with Gadget - the lady is wearing a blouse and skirt combo and the hairstyle is typical of about 1895-1905, which would fit with the boys' outfits too I think.

The body language suggests it is mother and sons as you suspected

Never apologise for such a lovely picture, we have got wonderful restorers on these boards, but you have to ask them to restore the picture if you want it done.

The lady is wearing a very nice Victorian broach, at her neck, so I will agree with Prue & Gadget re the dates of the picture.

If that was the fashion for the boys, you'd wear it, all the other lads would have look the same.  I am sure that you'd not want to be different   These two are really smart, but the little lad on the right looks ill to me.

I think they are Mother and Sons as well
