Hi

I am researching the Weighill/Weighells of Osmotherley. Beginning so far with William Weighill in around 1706.

Sarah Weighell, daughter of Mark Weighell and Jane Jackson. Other children I believe include
William
John
Mark

I believe Mark (1750) was the son of William Wieghell
Other children are (I think)
Sarah
William
Mary
Ann
Hannah
Dinah
Rachel

Any information would be gratefully received

Thank you
Debbie

Hi Debbie
The entry I have reads:
"John Weigell batchelor and Elizabeth alias Beatrix Weighell spinster both of the township of Osmotherley wre married in this church by licence from Mr Hooke Surrogate (not sure if this name is correct) this twentyseventh day of December 1785"

Unfortunately the copy does not show the names of the witnesses. It's very interesting though, that the bride and groom were both Weighell. I have found this with a couple of my ancestors in a nearby area, I think it was quite common for people to marry their cousins and more distant relatives.

Please let me know if you would like a copy.

Hi Deb..

I'm researching my family roots and have only got far back as 1861 Elizabeth Ann Weighell born in Hawnby but lived in Nether Silton (not to far away from Osmotherley - within 5 miles).  Perhaps my family branch is related to the Weighells from Osmotherley however I'm unable to trace who Elizabeth Ann was married too.

I have one record showing Elizabeth Ann Priest (which we think is her maiden name) being married to Thomas Weighell in Helmsy 1882.

Elizabeth Ann Weighell had 4 children all in Nether Silton - Emma, Elizabeth, Robert Edward & Thomas Garnett..

Any information that you have that may link my family tree would be greatly appreciated.

I think that her surname was "Elizabeth Ann Prest" no "i".  Marriages Jun 1882  to Thomas Weighell recoreded in Helmsley Volume 9d page 645, if this is who you are looking for there, father was Joab Prest carpenter of Hawby,
However if what you say "got far back as 1861 Elizabeth Ann Weighell born in Hawnby but lived in Nether Silton" Elizabeth Ann was born "weighell" then her maiden name cant be "Prest" as you say,

Thank Raybuck..

Apologies my tuping had got away with me, Elizabeth Ann Prest was her maiden name (i.e. she wasn't born Weighell).  Thank you for the information.

Do you have any further information on either Elizabeth Ann or Thomas weighell?

Hi,

My Osmotherley Smith family intermarried with the Weighells in the 1700s.  I live in Canada.  My Smith family emigrated in 1774.  There is some confusion over whether Nathaniel or Benjamin Smith married Rachel Weigell.   Perhaps there were two Rachel Weigells.

Benjamin Smith b 11 Mar 1745/46 at Ingleby Greenow d. 30 Jan 1814 in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada, married 13 Mar 1769 at Osmotherley to Rachel (some say Newsome, but I found Weighell in the Diocese_of_Durham_Bishops'_Transcripts_ca._1700-1900).

His brother Nathaniel Smith b 1751/51 is also reported to have married a Rachel Weighell before 1744 at Osmotherley.

Do you have this family in your data?

Thanks,

Ellen

I really haven't any interests in the subject matter only that I lived in Osmotherley, as sub postmaster and a lot of the names stick in the memory, knowing some of the families that were about when i was there, also especially as I was the church clock winder, and mowed the grass in the church yard around the grave stones
however if it is of any use there is a web site that seems to have copies of original records of Osmotherley BMD'swhich might be worth trawling,
on the following link click on the little arrow for York then on the arrow for Osmotherley and chose the date period that you are interested in

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?datestamp=1204024901500#p=2;c=1309819;t=browsable;w=

you should come to a page http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?datestamp=1204024901500#c=1309819;w=264;p=3

as you will see there are other areas that can be search if you need to look further
