Me again
but this could be William & Margaret in 1841 census.  Ages not always correct in that census.

Piece: SCT1841/171 Place: Alford -Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 4
Civil Parish: Alford Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 4 Page: 2
Address: Cornerstone
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Surname   First name(s)   Sex   Age   Occupation   Where Born   Remarks
REID   William   M   68   Ag Lab    Aberdeenshire
    REID   Margaret   F   74       Aberdeenshire

The site for looking for some census in Scotland is
http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
not all years areas there but I did a search on 1841 County Abderdeen area Alford and surname REID - left years and forename blank.
Alford also has 1851 and Margaret is alone there aged 84.
Problem is that both also through up a William Reid born Alford c 1800.!!!  I will try to find  a death cert for him.

Hi Lynne
Audrey could be correct .

I have just found in ALFORD records a death for WILLIAM REID

Death 1887 William Reid son of William Reid and Margt Watt
Aged 89 a crofter ADDRESS  is ARDGATHEN, ALFORD.
widower of Ann Burnett. Son Archibald informant - his add Cornerstone, Alford.

So in my view this rules out Wm born 1798 as Lynne's guy.
Not sure what you all think now but the Address ARDGATHEN on the Australian MI must mean we are close.
Did Margaret W have a child pre marrying W Reid.

According to census 1841 1851 Marg W   born c 1767 Alford.  She could easily have had a child(in or out of wedlock) before marriage to W Reid.

Hi Lynnee,
Thought you would be interested in the following :-

CALEDONIAN MERCURY
MONDAY, 9 SEPTEMBER 1916
The following persons have been served with indictments to stand trial before the ensuing Circuit Court of Justiciary, at Aberdeen, viz
William Watson, alias William Reid for forgery.

CALEDONIAN MERCURY
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1816

Aberdeen, Sept 18
Yesterday the Circuit Court of Justiciary was opened here by the Right Honourable Lord Gillies.
After the usual preliminaries, the Court proceeded to the trial of William Watson, alias Reid, shoemaker in Skene Street, Aberdeen, charged with forgery. The  indictment accused the panel of being guilty of uttering and using, as true and genuine, a false and forged letter, purporting to be written by John Reid, farmer of Guise, in the parish of Tough, and addressed to Mr Leith, builder in Aberdeen, requesting him to advance to the panel, William Reid, the sum of L10 Sterling, on his, Mr John Reid’s account. In this imposition, it appeared, that he succeeded, Mr Leith having advanced the sum desired; but at the same time taking due precautions to identify the prisoner, in case the letter in question should turn out to be forged. The libel was restricted to an arbitrary punishment, in terms of his own confession, and will receive sentence on Thursday.
Counsel for the Crown, Samuel McCormick, Esq. For the panel, William Buchanan, Esq.

CALEDONIAN MERCURY
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1816
Aberdeen, Sept 19.
The court met this day, and proceeded to pass sentence on those who had been tried on the 17th.
William Watson, alias Reid, being again called to the bar, received sentence of transportation for 14 years.

Regards.
Bill

Hi Bill Thanks for your information.
OK I will disregard the birth information so far. I am wondering if he used the name REID as an alias just for his crime? Given that he was stating the letter was from John Reid.
Trish and Audrey thanks for your input.
You have given me a lot of information about his crime.
Being convict stock  :) living in Aust. I am not familiar with the area in question. But I have been to Scotland back in 1982 and loved it.
Love
