William WATSON
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 14:46 BST (UK) »
I am new at this so please forgive me if I am doing this wrong.
I am searching for my great..grandfather William WASTON.

His grave stone in Sydney Australia read.
William Watson died 30 March 1841 aged 46 years. Native of Aberdeenshire Parish of Alford.
National Archives of Scotland NAS Catalogue.
William Watson, alias Reid, shoemaker, Address: Ardgathen. Entry relating to the crime of forgery. Date of trial: 17 Sep 1816, Verdict: Guilty, Verdict Comments: Guilty in terms of own confession, Sentence: Transportation - 14 years, Note: Sentenced on 19 September 1816 (see JC11/56, f.49r).

His birth would have been abt 1794. I have not been able to find any records on Family Search or Scotland People.

Any help would be apreciated.
Thanks
Lynnee

Hi Audrey, Thanks, It makes sense. I had a look at Family Search and could find William Ried but not his brother Robert. Could you tell me where you got our information from?

The other question I have is that the  records of Grave stone and Australian Census put birth at 1774.

Australian 1828 Census TNA copy
William Watson Age 34,  Lord Eldon, Arrival 1817,14 years, Shoemaker Windsor
Grave stone information from Grave Stone inscriptions NSW Vol 1, Sydney Burial Grounds Sandhills. by Keith A Johnson published 1973.

That is a 4 year difference in date of birth.

I am still learning and would appreciate any advice.
Thanks
Love

I still say William Reid is your man
Williams mother is recorded as WATS
Roberts mother as WAT both born Alford maybe some one else could look at this and see if they agree ,as for age my G . grandfather could have been born any where between 1824 /33 depending on which census I believe

Hi Audrey, thanks for your help.
If I order his record from the NAS do you know if it would have these details of parents and birth dates etc????. Not that I am planing to buy the records yet. But one day when I have enough money it would be nice.
Thanks

Hi Lynne
Audrey could be correct .
First I thought this William Reid's folks may not have married but they did  1794.
Marriage
28/10/1794 REID WILLIAM MARGARET WATT/ M Alford /ABERDEEN 171/ 0010 0187
Entry does not give any clues except that they were both of the parish.

William baptism 1798 shows same address as his MI in Australia ie Ardgathan.  NB: Baptism need not have been same year he was born!!!!

1798 registration in Alford Aberdeen for William in Apr 1st or 3rd just says.
"Wm Reid in Ardgathan: Wm Reid & Margt Watt in Ardgathan had a son baptised and named William. Witness Robt (could be Watson Weston) and John Leochill there."
 03/04/1798 REID WILLIAM     WM. REID/MARGT. WATT M Alford /ABERDEEN 171/ 0010 0113
01/04/1798 REID WILLIAM WILLIAM REID/MARGARET WATS FRCH2V2P1 M Alford /ABERDEEN 171/ 0010 0113
both entries above same data.

his brother:
26/02/1800 REID ROBERT WILLIAM REID/MARGARET WAT FRCH2V2P6 M Alford /ABERDEEN 171/ 0010 0118

I will send you copy of orig 1798 entry to your home email

Love from your nearly cousin(if we can get these Johnstons sorted).
Tricia.
