Hi paradise2431  :)

Welcome to Rootschat!!  I've split your enquiry off and made it into a new topic on our Photo Restoration and Dating board.

Apart from the obvious details about individual photographers (for which there are a few books that can help) the general principles of dating photos in the UK and Australia are pretty much the same, so you can post some of your pictures here (each on a separate topic) for help as well as using the links in the topic you originally posted on.

I'll have another look at your two pics and try to work out a date for you.

Hi again  :D

Both your photos probably date from the 1870s - is there any info on the backs of the photos at all to identify the photographer?

Cheers

Hmmmm. I have a very strong impression that I've seen the man in the second photo before - on this site and quite recently. Of course, I can't find it - but the impression remains. Does it ring a bell with anyone else?

Dating photos can be a pretty easy process actually. Dissect the photos by their pieces.. i.e. hairstyles and clothing. There are some great resources available that give you styles through the eras. I can tell by the tie on the one photo that I wold date is around 1889 or so.
