Bicknell or Bignell?
« on: Saturday 18 April 09 07:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have found my relative William Court marrying Ann Bignell in 1854 in Petworth (2q 2b 381) and I have found them together on the 1881 census, still in Petworth.  The census shows that Ann was born in Selborne in 1832 ish but I can't seem to find a match?  There was however a big family of Bicknell's living in the Selborne area, is it possible that Bignell is Bicknell ???

Thank you in advance

Answer is possibly. I can't speak for your clan, but my BICKNELLs can be found variously as BICKNALL, BRICKNELL, BRICKNALL, and other variations including BIGNELL on census. Considering the time period, you are still relying on a large degree of iliteracy and phonetic spelling.

Good luck.

Anne Bicknel baptised 12 Jan 1834 in Selborne, parents Edward & Elizabeth

Siblings appear to be (with double 'l' at the end of the name!):

James 5 Mar 1826
Elizabeth 17 Apr 1831
John  23 Jul 1837

Edward Bicknell married Elizabeth Aldred 21 Oct 1813 in Selborne

I have come across Anne Bicknel and that is why I wasn't complete sure if it was the same person or somebody different.

To be sure is there any sign of any Bignell's in Selborne?

Thanks for you help so far!

No, hence why I posted the above information. ;)

Confirmation/refutation of the identification can be had from her marriage certificate - it should contain her father's name.
