GUEST, Margaret
« on: Saturday 18 April 09 02:06 BST (UK) »
Evening All:

I am stuck with my ancestor, Margaret GUEST, born 1806 in Worsley, Lancashire.  I have no information on her except for her marriage info.

Margaret GUEST m. Thomas HINDLEY on June 9, 1836 at St. Mary's Deane
Parish.   (Confirmed by microfiche look-up at a kind soul).  Birth of
Margaret is noted in IGI post on LDS records.  Need to order certificate.

   Children:

        Mary Guest Hindley  b. 1837
        Elizabeth Hindley     b. 1839
        Jane Hampson Hindley b. 1842 (my 3x great-grandmother)
             m. Albert James Jones, Leigh, in 1869.  Immigrated 1887 to USA
        John W.G. Hindley   b. 1846

The HINDLEY and JONES line are coming along well -- I am now trying to fill in some gaps with the women that married into the family.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hiya Debra....so many marriages for Mary and Elizabeth Hindley in the register office of Leigh which is the register office that covers  Worsley.....however there is a VERY LIKELY marriage for
John Hindley to ESTHER HINDLEY in 1867 ..on  www.Lancashirebmd.org.uk   Ref No ROL/17/46 at Leigh register office.....ESTHER HINDLEY ?...a possible 1st or second cousin, although Hindley is a very common surname in this area..
.if you go to www.freebmd.org.uk
and trawl through the marriages (in Lancashire) you will find many many marriages for a Mary or Elizabeth....I genuinely think that is a lost cause unless you are prepared to buy ALL the marriage certificates....not recommended....good luck...allan
oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

If you find some that are more likely than others then the lancashirebmd reference is likely to be useful.  Lancsbmd shows the name of the church and the last part of the reference number is the number of the entry in the register.  That makes it very easy to look those up in the parish registers, as the kind soul who looks them up for you in the records office can go straight to the page.

By the way, you can't order a certificate for that 1836 marriage - it's before the start of civil registration.

Thanks to all for the direction!

Will check the LancashieBMD and see what I can match up.  As the IGI states Margaret, I will need to research other name interchanges - similar to a Mary/Marie/Maria situation.

Appreciate the help- off to search!

Deb

She's an in-law, bebbajohn.

Florence Hampson married John Noble Stevenson 16 Feb 1892 at the Register Office in Chorlton, Manchester.  Witnessed by J. Hampson & Emma Hughes.  Florence's father is given as William Henry Hampson, a town traveller.

I've not managed to find Florence's birth yet - well, I probably have, but I don't know which of the three Florence Hampsons with father William, for whom I've got birth certificates, is her.  Annoying.

She also doesn't appear on the censuses (not that I can find).

She's a black sheep that grandparents wouldn't talk about other than to tut, shudder and say "she went to London".  Presumably she and John split up.  Most likely she worked as an actress or similar in London.  She's certainly showing an indecent amount of flesh for that period!  The photograph is taken by Henry van der Weyde at 182 Regent Steet, London (the first photographer to use electric light in his studio) between Sep 1877 and 1902 (when his studio was in Regent St).
