Census 1841, 51, 61 - Lucy Ann CUSSON
« on: Saturday 19 February 05 17:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am still working on Watlings. Lucy Ann Cusson is a potential wife of John Watling b 1839. He is married to a Lucy Ann b. 1836 form Westleton. It has been suggested (with out source) that she is a Cusson. But I cannot find any Cussons in Suffolk in later census. Could someone please look at the earlier census. If some one has access to GRO or PR indexes could you find the Marriage of John to a Lucy Ann.

Thanks.

Hi Nic...No Cussons in Westleton in 1861 census...For interest while trawling the parish the only unwed Lucy I noticed was Lucy Spalding aged 24 b Westerton...Cheers Kris  :D

Hi Sue and Kris,

Thanks very much for that. That is spot on.

I had been looking for Gisson before and not found this Lucy Ann. Some suggested and had listed that it was Cussons.  Gissons is right on. I was also aware of the Wrentham listing in the 1871 census but it changed to Westleton in later ones.

Once again thanks a lot.

Best regards

Nic

Do you still need a 61 lookup for Lucy?  Judging by the ages of the children in 1871 she would have probably been a WATLING in 1861.

Hi Nic

As I haven't heard back from you, I am going to move this post across to the Completed Lookup Requests board.

If the information is still required, please feel free to post again, or ask me to move the post back to the active forum.

Best Wishes

I dug these out for you...

Baptisms at Dunwich St James.

All children of John and Lucy Ann Watling [or Whatling].
John was recorded as a "Groom" or "Groom and gardener".
On each occasion the stated abode was Dunwich.

Baptised 3 July 1870:
Kate - born 12 March 1868
Felix - born 5 March 1866
Mary - born 30 April 1870

Baptised 1 July 1877:
Lucy Ann - born 12 January 1860
Alice - born 31 March 1862
Harriet - born 11 December 1872
Robert - born 20 November 1873
Elizabeth Louisa - born 10 March 1876

Baptised 15 July 1877:
John Watling Gissing - born 29 August 1858
William - born 12 April 1864

Baptised 11 August 1878:
Richard - born 25 June 1878

Interesting that the eldest child - John Watling Gissing was recorded as the son of John and Lucy Ann Watling in the parish register in 1877, but only as the step son of John senior in the Census six years earlier. I also see that John and Lucy didn't marry until the first quarter of 1859.

Hi Dave,

Sorry to take so long to get back to you, I had not posting anything on rootschat for ages so had not been checking for replies. I had completely forgotten this piece of research I was doing.

Thanks so much for the PR dates I had not got any of them. I'm reasonably sure that John Watling Gissing is the son of John and Lucy Ann, just born before they got married. I think the 1871 census reference to step son (step was an addition) is wrong it was someone trying to explain the Gissing.

Having said that I have seen so many children born out of wedlock and nearly always they then to take the married fathers name. Frequently even when they weren't the actual father. It leaves a slight doubt.

take a look at me website http://www.pulfords.org.uk/getperson.php?personID=I1508&tree=Pulfords

Once again thanks very much.
