Hi there, I am an Australian descendant of John McLean Beatt's (Snr) sister Mary Beatts.  I have a lot in my private Ancestry.com family tree on the Beatts family.  We are distant cousins.  I would love to 'e-chat' with you.

Hi there Danganess!  We are distantly related!  I live in Australia too.  Had a holiday in Qsld last Xmas.  Wish we'd been able to catch up then! My Great x 3 Maternal Grandmother was Jessie Beatts Fleming, great x 2 Grandaughter of John McLean Beatts.  I'd love to give my email address, but that seems to get deleted by the moderator.  Perhaps you can use the pm system to give me your email address and then I can respond.  Or you could find my family tree on Ancestry.com (Tiernan nee Maclaine-Cross) and contact me that way?

Zabadeee,
My tree is on MY Heritage.
Would be great to swap information on the Beatts family.
I am stuck at Charles Beatts who was lost at sea off the coast of long Island.

Hi all,
To take the Beatts / Beats tree a bit further I recently came across a piece of information from the International Genealogical Index  stating:
 * Mrs John Rattray or Beat (Female) - Spouse. John Rattray or Beat, born about 1687 of Dunkeld, Perth, Scotland
 * John Rattray of Beat (Male) - Father. John Rattray or Beat, born 1 May 1709 of Dunkeld, Perth Scotland.
 * Margaret Beat (Female) - Father. John Rattray or Beat, Christened 19 August 1711, Lethendy and Kinloch, Perth, Scotland.

It is starting to look like the name went from Rattray to Beat, Beats then Beatts.
There is a story in the book "Reminiscences of a Dundonian" by J.M.Beatts which hints at the change of the family name where some members changed to Beatts.
Thanks all for the information received, Tim

Hi, JMB  and Agnes’s Budge are my great-great grandparents on my mother’s side. John was highly educated, he went to the burgh school followed by 5 years at the classical school and when finished he started work at the legal firm of Smith & Cagney. After 3 years of law he left with his wife for America to sort out family estates in Virginia. On completing that family task, I believe it was for the Budge family connections. They returned to Dundee where John took over his father-in-laws auctioneer and valuer business. He became a well respected member of the Dundee society, became the Commissioner of Police, a member of the Dundee council, a member of the Dundee Grammar School board and a noted writer with his articles being printed in newspapers and journals. He died at St Andrew’s and was buried with one of his granddaughters, unfortunately the grave is unmarked. His son, my great grandfather John McLean Beatts married Christina Lawson and worked for a time in and around the Liverpool docks in sales of jute bags. He learnt Chinese at the docks to add to his education as an accountant or bookkeeper. He fell on hard times so took his family back to Dundee and sailed to different ports buying goods to sell back in Scotland. He eventually settled in Halifax, Queensland, Australia where he purchased land to grow sugar cane, which he called “restview”. He sent for his wife, Christina Lawson, son John Leyland Beatts and daughters Agness Lizzie, Christina and Isabella Lawson.  Hope this helps?
