Crane family, Dromore Co.Down
« on: Saturday 19 February 05 16:38 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking information on the Crane family from Dromore Co. Down.
My fathers name was James Henry Crane and my Grandfather David.
He was a farmer at Quilly, just outside Dromore on the Rowantree road.

I just stumbled across this via Google and couldn't pass up registering.  I live in Austin, TX USA.  My last known ancestor to come from Europe was Margaret Crane born in Quilly on March 9, 1823.

Is there someone over there related to me?

Well, there's definately a link with my family. However, I don't know that much about the Crane side of the family. I'm trying to find out more but I haven't been very successful so far. My grandfather was called David Crane and he came from Quilly. I would like to trace my family tree back in time from there. There seem to be lots of James Henry Cranes in the family. One was a sergeant (I think).
Do you know anything about Crane Brush? Apparently he is an ancestor.
Please help!

BtW I visited the graves of Matilda, James Henry and their children in Hilsborough. Did one work in a post office or something?

Just got a bit more info here: dates of death for the JH Crane who married Matilda and their children...
James Henry Crane died 19th May 1932, his wife 31st May, 1932. Their son William Alexander died 17th June the same year and Mary Jane their daughter died March 1961.
Yes there is a link to Margaret Crane: she was my great great great aunt and she had a sister called Anna and a brother called David(I think). The two aunts raised my great grandfather when he was orphaned. They were both unmarried.
I also know of a James Henry Crane who was born in Ireland 1938. He was a sergeant and moved to St. Thomas Hampshire. His barracks were at Winchester. I don't know the link however.
Hope this helps.

I am also looking for relatives of Samuel, Isaac and Theodore Poots/Potts from the Pittsburg/Pennsylvania area of the States.  :)

I have just come across this post - realise its quite old but hopefuly some of you are still interested.  My grandmothers family are Crane from Quilly, Dromore.  The James Henry Crane you are discussing would be her great uncle.

James Henry Crane was a Sgt Major based at Hillsborough (a drill instuctor from 1911) .  He can be found in the 1911 census, aged 74, in Hillsborough.  I believe he had 7 children.  Mary Jane, Alexander, Matilda and Walter (b. c1878).  Also he had James Henry (1871-1879) and 2 daughters who died in infancy.  These 3 children are buried at Dromore Cathedral.
