Thanks Deryck, no need to cross it out, I still think it is useful to know of a possible Alderson connection.

Hi mongojoby

Sorry had to go offline for a while.  Am I right in assuming that the Jonathan you are trying to trace is in later census records married to an Elizabeth and always gives c1834 Rainton or Middle Rainton as his birthplace?  This is why I thought the baptism with parents Matthew and Mary looked a good possibility.

The Margaret listed with young Jonathan in 1851 could be his cousin, not necessarily his sister, as they are just listed as nephew and niece to Jonathan head of household.  Jonathan's birthplace is given as Durham Houghton and Margaret's is just dittoed for Durham, so not conclusive.

There are these two other baptisms that I found for children with parents Matthew and Mary, not necessarily the same couple, maybe you could check those out on familysearchlabs pilot site too:

Easington   St. Mary the Virgin
4 Sep 1836 Anne Wilkinson, daughter of Matthew Wilkinson & Mary

Pittington  St. Lawrence
22 July 1838 Margaret Wilkinson, of Pittington, child of Matthew Wilkinson (waggonman) & Mary

And another Margaret baptised Houghton le Spring:
Houghton-le-Spring  St. Michael & All Angels
27 Apr 1834 Margaret Wilkinson, of Houghton, daughter of Thomas Wilkinson & Isabella

Still trying to find Matthew and Mary with son Jonathan in 1841 though.....

Barbara

Thanks Barbara,

You are right in your assumpton about my Jonathan.  I too like the baptism you found.  Jonathan's first born son was also called Matthew which seems a nice little added coincidence.

If I had to I'd put my money on Margaret being Jonathan's sister (purely because I can't track either of them down in 1841 so fancy them to be mistranscribed together!), but I appreciate the point you are making.

The Paul Joiner marriage index shows one marriage for a Matthew Wilkinson to a Mary in County Durham 1830 +- 3 years (costs £2.50 for full details!)

It may be this one:
Gateshead Fell    St. John's Church
19 Apr 1830 Matthew Wilkinson, of this parish married Mary Burrell, of this parish

I suppose really the best thing would be to find Jonathan and Elizabeth's marriage first (possibly 1852 as you say)  and work back from that, with fathers' names and occupations.

Matthew's birth cert c1853 would hopefully show her maiden name

Have you managed to trace Elizabeth with any certainty in the 1851/41 census?

Thanks for providing that Barbara.  Can't justify the £2.50 cost on the basis of what we know so far, so that will have to wait until I hopefully find out more.

I'm pretty sure the 1852 marriage is their's, due to the fact one of their son's is given Alderson as a middle name.  I only just ordered and received the next Wilkinson generation down marriage certificate, so will have a wait a while to confirm/ find out father's names.

Haven't been able to track down Elizabeth Alderson on either 1841 or 1851.  Unfortunately there is some discrepancy with her age (Jonathan was younger then her so might explain it).  It seems relatively certain that she born in Bernard's castle and there is one born around 1828 on 1851, which I haven't discounted due to age discrepancies.

Well I have checked Houghton le Spring enumeration districts 1-14 and Jonathan is most definitely not there. Dozens of other Wilkinsons but no sign of the one you want! Sorry.

Hi Jen,

Same here, no sign of Matthew & Mary either, unless Matthew had died maybe

Anyway, will leave it now until mongojoby has Jonathan's marriage cert

Hi

You can see the Bishop's transcript of the Jonathon Wilkinson christening, 29 Nov 1833 at http://search.labs.familysearch.org

It is image number 173 in the Houghton le Spring 1830-1847 records.  The parent's address is Middle Rainton and Matthew is a pitman.

The christening on 10 Jan 1836 is shown on image 279 in the same set as above.  The parent's address is Houghton and John is a waggon man.

All the best
