Hi,

I am descended from the HARCOURT's of NEATISHEAD AND BARTON TURF later moving to NORWICH.

They were originally called HARKER but changed their name in order to get money left in a will.

I have massive amounts of information about the whole of the family and I am willing to help others if this is needed.

Dear Ferret1,

Being familar with this family and their lineage through Norfolk Family History Society (NFHS) I have seen no evidence to support your statement

"They were originally called HARKER but changed their name in order to get money left in a will".

I'd be very interested in hearing of your source.

Regards
Fjale

Hi Fjale,

I think this information came from a book called Norfolk Families - I will have to check this and get back to you.

What is your interest in the Harcourt family? are you related?

Hi hamandpineapple,

I am more than happy to help. What I suggest is that we can exchange trees. I am currently travelling but I will check ASAP how much of your tree I have From 1863 onwards ..... I have back to the 17th century. Plus a few ideas of where it goes from there.

I am still waiting to hear back from Ferret1 abt their claim that "They were originally called HARKER but changed their name in order to get money left in a will". I don't dispute the name change but I don't think it had anything to do with the money which came later on the death of a relative.

But happy to hear any other theories especially if there is documentary evidence.

Thanks Fjale. It will be good to share notes.

My son is performing in a show for the next 3 days, so I may not have much of a chance to get online.

I'd noted the name change from 'Harker', but havn't yet come across any evidence as to why! Perhaps nothing more intriguing than mis-transcription over the years.

Catch up again as soon as I can

Kind Regards
Hamandpineapple

Hi Fjale and hamandpineapple

many apologies for my tardiness in not getting back sooner - other matters were more pressing i'm afraid

regarding john changing his name from harker to harcourt or harecourt as i have seen it spelt. john was the nephew and joint heir to Rev. Edward Boys' wealth and he had properties at Neatishead, Horning and Great Yarmouth. i have an old family tree that was prepared by a relative many many years ago and it is on this document that it states that he changed his name because of receiving monies. perhaps this has been family legend, but i do not have copy of the norfolk families book to which i earlier referred having seen it in a library several years ago. sorry to disappoint.

hamandpineapple - i am also descended from John Harcourt (born c 1683 Barton Turf) and Ann Jermy, although through their son john b. c. 1716

your ancestor, whom i have as being spelt boyse, was christened on 16.03.1709/10 and probably born at hainford, norfolk. he married deborah curtis (or curteys) on 26.03.1734 at heigham, norfolk. deborah died at stalham in 1786 and boyse died in december 1752 being buried at st. peter mancroft, norwich on 15.12.1752
boyse was a merchant grocer of norwich and he sold his neatishead property to his brother jermy.
boyse and deborah had 5 children:
deborah c. 1733
rebecca c. 16.04.1736
john c. 29.03.1740
anne c. 05.03.1740/1
boys c. 07.11.1744

deborah married john aldham on 31.01.1760 at st. peter mancroft, norwich

rebecca married john matthews on 12.03.1761 at st. peter mancroft, norwich

john married ann durrant on 24.10.1769 at neatishead, norfolk.  ann was born in c. 1751 and died on 17.12.1828, she was buried on 24.12.1828 at neatishead.   john died on 28.08.1808 at neatishead and was buried at irstead, norfolk

anne married william goodbody on 21.01.1765 at st. peter mancroft, norwich

boys died on 02.02.1822 in yarmouth, norfolk - i do not have record of him marrying.

john harcourt and ann durrant had 4 children:

mary
jermy
clarissa b. c. 1789
juliet

mary married john dutchman on 04.04.1798 at neatishead

jermy married elizabeth marston on 16.10.1803 at neatishead

clarrisa married james cubitt on 18.07.1810 at neatishead

juliet married john baxter bond on 01.10.1811 at irstead, norfolk

i do not have any details of any children from john's marriage to elizabeth but would be interested to know if the details you have match mine and if you have any details of any children to john and elizabeth

i am the 7th great grand daughter of john harcourt and ann jermy and still keep the name.
