LOWNIE - Parish Records, census
« on: Wednesday 15 April 09 00:28 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the family of Alexander Lownie (b about 1816)  found in the 1841 Census for Midlothian. Members are Helen (1816), Alex (1831), William (1833), Elizabeth (1835), Helen (1837) and Jean (1841). I believe my ancestor, William, went to Pennsylvania about 1850 or so. I am trying to trace back his family in Scotland. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you! Christine

Where in Midlothian were the family living in 1841?

Do the family all show as being born in the census county?

Are there any occupations given?

The more information you have the easier it is to narrow down the search.  :)

Hi Kirsty,

I wish I knew more. That is all the information I could glean from ancestry.uk as I don't have a subscription. If anyone has access, I would be grateful.

Thank you,
Christine

 Dear   Christine
I have Lownie or Leownie(alt spelling) in my direct line.
The earliest is the birth of Agnes daughter of William Lownie in opr born 12-5-1775 in Genisla.  She is next found getting married in Newburgh 19-05-1800 to James  Blyth. I have copies from the registers although they are not easy to read.
I thought this might provide you with a clue to the location of the family prior to the1841 census.  Newburgh is in Fife I  think. Hope this helps .
Sue.

Hello Christine (and Sue)
I have found a MARGARET LEOWNIE(mother) and Hugh Wallace(father) gave birth to Nicholas (female!) in Newburgh Fife Scotland Nov 02 1801. I am trying to trace where Margaret Leownie came from, so if you have any more info Sue I would be very grateful
Many Thanks

David, i don't have any information on a Margaret Leownie at present but is is possible that she and my Agnes and William were related.  Shall keep you in mind if I discover anything.  Have a look at a Glenisla connection. Sue

1841 Census  from FREECEN Crown Copyright © General Register Office for Scotland
- look for LONNIE - you will find them all.

Jane (Jean) was married to James Mellon (letter Carrier) and died on 23rd October 1870 aged 29  24 Pleasance, Edinburgh being the daughter of Alexander Lonnie (General Dealer) and Helen Darling .       They married  24th November 1862 in St.Patricks in the Cowgate - listed as LOUNIE and according to the IGI they had the following children:

Could be that James remarried and settled in Dundee but no research into that line at this time.
