finding the ship from Lancashire

 I am having great difficulty with one aspect of my ancestors coming to Canada.
 My gr. grandmother Nancy Wroe/Roe and baby Caleb came on the ss Polynesian in 1880. Gr GrandfatherThomas W. was not on the ship's list so I figured he came in 1879 in order to get the land grants that were offered. Now I find out that his parents  Caleb and Alice Wroe/Roe also came here. I can't find them anywhere but see that Caleb sr. returned to Lancashire from Ontario in June 1900. No Alice.
Is anyone able to see ship's lists from 1879 to Quebec with destination as Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada? I'm hoping that The four people will be there. I would think that maybe they took the same ship. maybe.    Mykin

Even so, that's a tough one.  Have you tried the passenger lists on
findmypast.com? 

In theory, all passenger lists for leaving Britain (from 1868?), should be on there.  Not sure if it's complet yet, though.

If the entry isn't there, it's difficult.  I know we've found a few people who were missing from earlier lists, but we have some missing.

Hi, sorry, only from 1890 given on here, but you might get some entries as far as I can tell.  Searching is free and you do get dates.

 yes I have tried findmypast and a couple of others but no luck. This time period seems to be hard to find.
A person in England got me  a couple of the answers but just said that they went on to a pay site and got some onfo then went on to collectionscanada.ca  That place is in Ottawa and you can view the records. A 12 hour train ride return for me.
So hope that someone has access to something that will help me.
Is there a ship's list on ancestry.ca?

There are quite a large group of passenger databases on ancestry.com but most of us if we have subscription for a while, just have the uk version.  More is being added to that though.  Some libraries have an edition with mpre international data on t.

I'll have another look at ancestry though.

Sorry. the lisls I was thinking of were for this countries incoming lists.

Ancestry have just added Canadian passenger lists for 1865 - 1935. 

I put Wroe, 1879 and got 27 results, including a Thomas, but of course when I tried to look at the details it invited me to pay for the International version.  Of course we don't even know if the result was exactly correct. 

You might find someone on here in Canada who has it, or visiting a library which has it.  Looks as if he may well have gone though.

It might be worth trying an Emigration board on Rootschat?

The above only had 1.5 stars relevance.  There were about a dozen Thomas Roe's with three stars relevance, so I think you need a person or establishment with unlimited access to details.

CollectionsCanada has scans of the passenger lists 1865-1922 online for free. Not indexed though, so you will probably end up with tired eyes. Also, don't assume that just because they ended up in Quebec that that was their point of disembarkation. They might have gone overland from Halifax, especially in winter.

My people were post 1900, and the detail improves as you get later.

Thank you emms for your help. It is a 12 hr. train trip to Ottawa, return, to see the documents but I might just have to go there. Wouldn't it be nice to have a good friend in all the cities that you need research done?
