S.A. BD&M - Those missing HILLs
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 12:42 BST (UK) »
I am trying to complete a family & have two missing children. (Knowledge of the children's names comes from family stories) I am looking for something (anything) on;
Frederick HILL &
Samuel HILL
plus a brother James HILL, born abt 1830, Wiltshire.

All I know is their names, I don’t know if they were born in South Australia or Wiltshire. Similarly, I don’t know where they died.

What I do know is the parents were
Thomas HILL, born Wiltshire, died 11 Jun 1876, Marden S.A.
Rachel DEW?, born Wiltshire, died 27 Aug 1874, Marden S.A.
(they migrated 25 Mar 1849, with 5 children, aboard the “Ramillies”

their children were;
George HILL married, Mary JONES (I know their details)
-   migrated 1 Feb 1850, with 2 children, aboard the “Agincourt”
Emma HILL married David MILLS (I know their details)
-   migrated 16 Jul 1848, with 1 child, aboard the Sibella
Benjamin HILL married Jane MILLARD (I know their details)
-   migrated 12 Nov 1852, with 2 children, aboard the “China”
James HILL born abt1830/1831 at Wiltshire – I don’t know anything more about him
Virtue HILL married Jonah HOBBS – (I know their details, died in South Australia)
Lewis HILL married Agnes MacVICER – (I know their details, died in South Australia)
Sidney HILL married Mary Ann MILLS  – (I know their details, died in South Australia)
Charlotte HILL married Benjamin HOOPER  – (I know their details, died in South Australia)

So from the migration records, 5 children came out on the “RAMILLIES”. I assume 4 of them were Virtue, Lewis, Sidney & Charlotte. I am missing one. Aged 17/18, James was probably too old to be classed as a child?

Can anyone please find any details of James HILL, Frederick HILL or Samuel HILL in South Australia.

Regards
Grantley

There is a James Hill aged 35, Gardener, from Wiltshire who arrived on the Mary Ann in 1854.

Also, his wife Elizabeth 29, Emily 3 and William 1

A check of the SA bdm indexes may indicate if he is the one you are looking for.

Thankyou trish1120, that 1841 Census was my starting point.

Thankyou Cazay for the migration details. It seems that the ship was actually “Lord of the Isles”, not the “Mary Ann”. But I would never have found it without your help.

The family that I am researching was from the Dilton Marsh area of Wiltshire. More particularly they seemed to be from Short Street, & Stormore & Westbury.

A nearby town was Frome, Somerset, where the child George was married.

Using the migration details supplied by Cazay I have now found on FreeBMD;
a James HILL married Mar qtr 1851 Elizabeth ASHMAN – Frome district
an Emily HILL born Mar qtr 1851 – Frome district

I can not find them in the 1851 Census.

If my James did migrate separately, then that adds weight to the existence of Frederick or Samuel is South Australia.

The answer seems to be in Death or Marriage records, that I am hopeful that someone might find (including Emily & William).

Grantley

Hi Grantley

I know it has been a long time since your post about the Hill family, so I am not sure if you are still investigating them or not.  I am descended through and Thomas and Rachel Hill's daughter Emma.

I have not had the time at this stage to determine whether this information belongs with our Hill family with certainty, but this is what I currently have on Samuel and Frederick:-

- A Samuel Hill and wife migrated on the "Duke of Bedford" from London, arriving Adelaide December 5th 1848. No children listed (Bound for South Australia disc)
- A Samuel Hill (listing his father as Thomas) marries in Adelaide on 27/1/1859 to a Matilda Hubert. Both parties do not have a status recorded, which I have seen before on some marriage certificates where the parties were married before (SA Marriages 1842-1916 disc)
- A Samuel Hill of the right age dies on 22/8/1893 in Kensington, South Australia (SA Deaths 1842-1915 disc).
- The birth of a Frederick Hill is recorded in Wetbury District, Wiltshire for the December quarter of 1843 (Free BMD)
- The marriage of a Frederick Hill occures in Westbury District of Wiltshire in September quarter of 1861 (Free BMD). I have not found a female name to match this entry as yet.
- a Frederick Matthew Hill is recorded as having 4 children with a woman called Eliza Cross at Horrocks Pass in South Australia, starting from 1863. I have not found a marriage for this couple in South Australia or Wiltshire.

I hope you find this information useful and please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss further.

The Samuel HILL who arrived in 1848 was most likely married to Dorothy Luke VISICK at Truro Cornwall just before emigrating to SA. Unlikely to be any connection as they had children from 1850 - 1866.
