Wickenden family
« on: Monday 13 April 09 21:10 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find more information on Edith Mary Wickenden, My Grandmother.

Her parents were Thomas Charles Wickenden & Mary Warn
The children were:-
Edith Mary b1886 Hyde Hill Kent (Ide Hill?)  Married & lived in Croydon.
Esther b1874 Northfleet
Francis b1876 Battersea or Gravesend
Eliza b1879 Lambeth
Alice Mary b1881 Gravesend
Thomas b1885 Gravesend
Agnes Emily b1890 Croydon
Bertie Ernest 1897 Croydon

Thomas and Mary were married in 1872 in Northfleet and I believe his father was also Thomas.  Beyond that, I draw a total blank. They travelled around Kent a lot hop-picking.    Were they Gypsies?

I would love to hear from anyone who has these siblings in their family.

Geoff

I guess you obtained that info mostly from the 1881 census ?

Do you want Thomas and Mary tracked back in the census years pre-marriage ?

(amazed at how many Thos Wickendens were around !)

PS. As they had a permanent address (at least in 1881) I doubt they were actual gypsys ....

PPS. Do you have that 1872 Marriage Cert with full details ? Have you verified Mary's maiden name on one of the kids birth Certs ?

Hi

Wickenden is a Kent name - so there will be millions around.
(My maternal grandmother was a Wickenden from that area. havent done a lot of work on that line yet, but I DO know that there are loads around)
So - take it one step at a time as will be easy to go of after the wrong guy!

So - good advise from LKL - get that marriage cert etc to confirm details.

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Many thanks for all the information.
LKL
I have access to all the censuses 1841 - 1901 but pre-1881 both Thomas and Mary have disappeared off the radar.   I do have the marr cert for 1872 which shows Thomas Wickenden as the son of Thomas Wickenden and Mary as the daughter of Francis Warn.   I am afraid there are no Inkpin/pen in my family.

Thanks for the advice.   I have been researching for a number of years now and have managed to trace the other 3 grandparents back to 1700,s OK.
It is just the Wickenden line that is bugging me.   Although I remember my Grandmother quite well, there were various hints from other members of the family about the Gypsy element.

Oh well, I'll keep persisting and hope another member of the family may contact me.

Hi Marilyn,

As I said in my previous posting, I do have the marriage certificate.  However I would be interested to know where it can be viewed on-line for free!

Although I've posted on various groups, I'm new to this one;  PM is what??

Regards,

Geoff.

Hi Geoff

The parish registers for Northfleet along with a number of others in the Medway, Gravesend and Dartford area are online at Medway Cityark http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/
http://www.rootschat.com/links/062f/

There were certainly WARN(E) travellers who settled in the Croydon area and I do seem to recall coming across a Frank WARN(E) (I see Mary's father was Frank/Francis) somewhere - will have a look around.

I believe this could be Thomas W in the 1871 census .... age is a bit out (not unusual) but area in which enumerated and occupation seem good.

1871 - RG10/896; Folio: 28; Page: 47 - Northfleet / Gravesend
22, Upper Percy St

boarding with the Popletts ......

Thomas Wickenden    30 Single Boarder Farm Labourer born Kent, Brasted

(I think his PoB of Gravesend in the 1881 was 'for convenience' )

Also noticed that in 1891 (Thornton Heath) his YoB was given as 1840 too - altho sadly, PoB was 'not known'

Its possible to trace this man back to 1851 where he is  [step]son of a William Inkpen, and there are Wickenden stepkids in the family    ..... you could try and see if he's with the mother Susannah (theres an Inkpen / Wickenden marriage at the right time frame in the SevenOaks District) ... as Tho Wick* back in the 1841 and it might show his father.

Leave it to you as you have access to Ancestry  :)
