1902 inquest into the death of Ernest Cheesman

Hi, I have read on a local village Public House website, quoting information from an inquest from 1902. Can anyone advise where the details of inquests are kept?

The inquest in question was of a Westcott ( Near Dorking in Surrey) resident named Ernest Cheesman (an infant) and the date is 1902.

Any help gratefully received.

The local Record Office should be able to tell you what is available, but usually a local newspaper report is the best bet.

Hi,

Coroners inquests in Surrey from 1892 to 1933 are divided between 3 districts: Kingston, Reigate and Guildford. Dorking would come under Guildford. The surviving records are held by Surrey History Centre, but they state that no records for Guildford survive before 1925.

Hi Erica, I really don't know how to thank you (I feel quite moved). I have now looked at the link that you sent and have read about Ernest Cheesman (who would have been my Uncle) My sister had said that our Granmother had told her that she had gone to court over the death of a a daughter due to a vaccination. Whether time had changed this or indeed whether there was another child I don't know.

What is somewhat concerning is that a local history group (Westcott) have part of the transcript about Ernest and his mother and that this has been copied on to a local Public House website... it only shows the medical doctors viewpoint which I don't wish to repeat here. Needless to say my brothers and sister are not happy about it. My grandmother lived to an old age and died in the 1950's.

What an awful state of affairs. I will be writing to the local history group and also the public house.

Hi Neil,
I can well see how putting this on a public website would cause you & your family distress especially when it only states the medical point of view & what they assumed caused his death which was a slur on your Grandmothers character which after investigation proved groundless!
I personally know the Chairman of the Wescott Family History Group & I'm sure he'll be sympathetic to your grievance. 
Ernest's sad demise is an important part of the local history but I feel that the FULL inquest findings should be included on this public House's website!

Hello!  Sorry to hijack this post but I have a Percy Cheesman in my family from Surrey.  He married Doris Humphreys in about 1911.  Is there any connection with your family?
