1911 census-question
« on: Sunday 12 April 09 15:56 BST (UK) »
Just wondering if no occupation is put down for my family member would he be unemployed?

He was working in the 1901 census and was working when he married in 1918- so was just was wondering!

He was visiting a friend with his young son on the night of the census (great luck for me! not)

Also, the blanked out bit that is on the image ,is that on all images or just the ones that have a comment? Maybe my G.Granddad put himself down as deaf/dumb/blind-lunatic-or he was so drunk the emmerator thought he was!!

Also, sorry is it only the head of house that has to say how many children they have/had. Mine listed himself as a visitor with his 6 year old son,married (wife must have been at home, cant find her or one of the ladies to refuse to do the census, looks like married 9 years (he was married only 6) then nothing until the "ditto" of where born.

Thanks, Ele

Hi
As far as I know the blanked out bit is on all of the 1911 census images. I believe it has something to do with the 100 year rule, and the data protection act, so they aren't allowed to reveal that column yet. I'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong!

With regard to the section about number of children, I was under the impression that it was only the married women who had to fill that part in. Although, luckily for me, my G Grandad had filled his bit in!

I'm afraid I don't know why your G Grandad's occupation wasn't filled in. Maybe the head of the household didn't know what your G Grandad's job was?

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck finding your G Grandma - mine too has disappeared from the 1911 census!

The instructions for filling in the occupation column on the Schedule  were;

3. OUT OF WORK. - If out of work or disengaged at the time of the Census the usual occupation must be stated.
