William F. PRESHAW
« on: Sunday 12 April 09 14:56 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for William f. Preshaw who married Christian Lyall in 1862 in Kincardine Scotland I can't find them in the Scottish or English census after the marriage. There might be a possibility they went to Australia, it's a long shot. William was born in 1833 in Fettercairn In Kincardine Scotland. Is it possible for some-one to have a look for me?

From the NSW BDM ( http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm )

Is this your man?   I included George because he has the same parents.
1876  PRESHAW  WILLIAM  (Parents: WILLIAM  ISABELLA)  (Place: BALRANALD )
1890  PRESHAW  GEORGE O  (Parents: WILLIAM F  ISABELLA W)  (Place:  CAMDEN)

Not sure if you are familiar with NSW, but Balranald is in south west NSW and Camden is just south of Sydney.

There are births to George O and Anna M (1884) and George W and Edith M (1889 and 1891) and James A and Alice G (1905 and 1907).  The birth index only goes to 1908.

Good luck

Jean

There is a mention in the Police Gazette (23 June, 1875) of Mr W F Preshaw, superintendent, Canally Station, who identified some clothing found near the remains of human bones at Tarloc, on the Canally Station, South-Western District.

The Aldine Centenary History of NSW (1888) gives the following details about G O Preshaw:
THE BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES (Camden branch) was opened in 1865 by Mr W Drummond, the first manager.  The present manager is Mr G O Preshaw, who is a son of the late Dr Preshaw, of Victoria.

William Fisher Preshaw was on the list of Justices of the Peace empowered to consent to the marriage of minors at Castlemaine (Victoria) in 1865.

However he was already a Magistrate at Castlemaine in August 1857, so that was before the marriage wasn't it?  Or is this the father?

Even earlier:   mention of the Castlemaine Hospital, which "was founded as early as the year 1853, those who took a prominent part in the beneficient work having been the late Dr Preshaw..."  "A temporary building .. was erected .. a dispensary having been opened in Castlemaine by Dr Preshaw, ad interim."

The Australian Medical Pioneers Index ( http://www.medicalpioneers.com/search.htm ) gives a little about William Fisher Preshaw, including his date of death, aged 56 on 7 March 1866 at Castlemaine.  It also says he arrived on the "Garland" ex Liverpool 26 April 1852 arriving Melbourne 31 July 1852.

Apparently his family came a little later, arriving in August 1852 on the Castle Eden:

PRESHAW MARTHA 51
PRESHAW DANIEL 21
PRESHAW WILLIAM 19
PRESHAW ISABELLA 17
PRESHAW MARGARET 15
PRESHAW GEORGE 11
PRESHAW JOHN 9
PRESHAW MARY 6
PRESHAW ROBERT 5
PRESHAW LYDIA 4

Does all this fit in with what you know about your family?

Jean

Also on the Probate Index from Victoria:
Isabella W Preshaw   Widow Castlemaine 12 Oct 1896
Robert H Preshaw   Clerk West Melbourne 4 Sep 1873
William F Preshaw   Surgeon Castlemaine 7 Mar 1866

I'll be interested to hear from the Victorian ladies on this list to see what they turn up.

Jean

P.S. I hope this is your family ! !

Well found Jean!

The records show  the  family  in New Jersey  in 1851 and  reveal  that Allthough William Fisher Preshaw (Snr)  was born in England a number of  the children were born in Scotland.

There is no  sign of a marriage in Victoria for young William  allthough a number of his brothers and sisters married  there, but as Hearross says  they were married in Scotland in 1862  looks like  he has ventured back  there

There is a death  in  Victoria for a William Fisher Preshaw  but he is  the son  of the brother Robert Preshaw and his wife Anne Wallace born 1866.

I  have had a good search  but can  find no  record of  Christian Preshaw nee Llyall.

Heaross,  have you  checked for her death in Scotland?

The Preshaw family  were not  lucky  most of  the sons  died youngish  and even  some of their children  died very young, one of Williams brothers lost two  little children aged 3 and 5 on  the same day in Victoria.

I  have not detailed all of  the  marriages and deaths as yet as you  may not want  them but if you do I will post them up if  you want.

kind  thoughts Jenn

PRESHAW
William Fullerton
16 Jun 1833   Fettercairn, Kincardine, Scotland
Parents  William PRESHAW    Isabella OGILVY

Jean may have found William - same parents' given names but no 2nd given name or initial for Wm F on the indexes, so not conclusive.  Jean do you have access to the Balranald/Hay cemetery records?

From the NSW BDM ( http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm )
