Further to Debbie's posting, he doesn't appear nationally in 1871.  Nor could I see any other GILLs in or born Hinksey in 1871 or 1881  ???

Are you certain of his birthplace or are you just going by the 1881 census at the moment?

Do you have any details on his parents ie. father's name & occupation from the marriage certificate?

Best wishes

I have found a possible registration for his birth in Free BMD

William Gill       Abingdon Reg Dist March qtr 1860 vol 2c page 290

Abingdon would cover South Hinksey (along with other places) so it could be him

don't know where he was in 1871 though ???

Right - I have now had chance to look at the register transcripts for South Hinksey, there are 2 entries for the surname Gill

A baptism 1863 Nov 22nd Mary Jane d (age 15 years in pencil) of Absolom & Mary Gill - carpenter of New Hinksey - privatly

and a burial Jan 20th 1867
Mary Gill aged 48 of New Hinksey

If someone could find Absolom in 1871 it might give some more clues  :-\

Eliza wife 45 b.Southend Essex
Benjamin CABLE step son 14 b.London? Middlesex
James CABLE step son 12 b.London? Surrey

The birthplaces have been crossed through hence difficult to read.

Maggiemay

Have just read your posting further up the board ................ does this mean that you are now looking for somebody else and not William?  Or am I just getting confused?

Hi Maggiemay & Casalguidi

well done Casel finding them in 1871 (I think Maggie must mean that she is now looking for this lot as the ones she had beofre were wrong - hope).

The details on that Absolom tie in nicely with a baptism (from the IGI) in Painswick Glous of Absolom s/o Charles & Mary Gill  21st November 1817
