9th Lancers Italy
« on: Saturday 11 April 09 22:28 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a query regarding the 9th Lancers if anyone can help.

My grandfather and his brother were both POW's in WW2 - they were apparently captured in Italy, about 1944. They both served in the 9th Lancers. Does anyone have any information about this? Where abouts they were captured/where they ended up? Any other useful/interesting information about this event?

It's a bit of a long shot, but if anyone will know, it'll be someone on this board!

Many thanks,

C

Well, in the absence of anyone else....

The 9th fought at San Savino in (I think) Sept 1944 , over the following winter they fought as infantry, then tankies again for the bridgehead over the river Po.

The best bet would be the regimental museum, theres not much on wikipedia, but a google search might unearth more.

War Diaries at Kew would be invaluable.

Good luck

Pete.

Thanks for your reply - I am going to go to the museum I think, and see what I can find out. Google hasn't been that good for me, I think the information I need is a little more specific. Thanks for the pointers!

Clair,

I'm a new member of Roots with an interest in military history and saw your enquiry.

When British POWs came home the majority were questioned by British Military Intelligence about their captivity as they were looking for evidence of war crimes. They were asked to fill in a form which asked them when and where they were captured and what happened to them afterwards.

These questionnaires are now available at the National Archives at Kew and are filed alphabetically by name in class WO344. It is not certain that your relatives will be included but there is a good chance they will be.

You will either have to visit Kew yourself or get a researcher to find and copy any relavant papers for you. The National Archives website gives details of their service and lists private researchers.

Good Luck
