Furlongs of Milltown
« on: Saturday 11 April 09 08:39 BST (UK) »
I have a Sarah Furlong, born 17.05.1876 in Milltown, Ferns.  Her father is shown on birth cert as William Furlong, occupation Hook grinder?  Her mother is shown as Ann Furlong nee Lacey.  Sarah married William Kirwan on 29.01.1899. Father's occupation now 'Smith'
Any info on this family (especially William and Ann Furlong) gratefully received.

Hello there,
I am also researching the surname ''Furlong'' My Great Grandmother ''Ellen Furlong'' born in Milltown-Ferns married a William Sunderland in the early 1900's. They both sadly parished inthe Spanish/Black Flu in 1918/19 both aged in the early 30's they left behind 5 Very Young daughters
I have being trying for a long time to find names of Ellens Parents but keep hitting brick walls, perhaps there could be a connection with you Furlong lady?
Any info would be of most help
Thank you

Hi It looks like your Ellen and my Sarah could be sisters.  The 1911 census (pointed out to me by Luimneach) shows my Sarah Furlong (now married to William Kirwan) living at no. 7.  Next door at no. 6 is her mother Anne and sister Elizabeth (a witness at Wm and Sarah's wedding), .  At no. 14 is John Furlong (probable brother), and ther is a William and Ellen Sunderland at no. 17 - both are aged 21, and they have a one year old dtr Margaret - are these yours?  If so, we now need to find a marriage for William Furlong and Anne Tracey (not Lacey!) around 1876  (my Sarah was born in 1876, John c.1879, Elizabeth c.1879 - both 32 on 1911 census (twins?), and your Ellen 1890.

Hi - Glad to be of assistance.  I'm also in England (West Sussex), so often struggle to get info easily.  These people are all my husband's relatives.  The arrival of the 1911 census and the LDS site are my main sources of info.  I'm looking when I can, but let me know if you have any luck with a marriage for William Furlong and Anne Tracey - I'm not sure if it is Tracey or Lacey - as Luimneach pointed out John Furlong's birth record has Tracey, but Sarah's record on LDS says Lacey!  I have a copy of Sarah's birth cert  and it's really difficult to tell if it's Lacey or Tracey - and the aunt's surname (who was present at the birth) seems to read Lacy (without the e)!  very confusing!  I have put all the stuff I have on my husband's family on the Ancestry.co.uk site - Kirwan family tree, which I'm happy to share with you.
I'd be interested to hear what became of your grandmother and her sisters, orphaned at a young age.
Best wishes, Julia

Hello again.
Thanks for your reply to me. I have since found out from a distant cousin that my GGrandmother Ellen Furlong's parents names where ''Thomas Furlong & Ellen Thorpe'' so, your Sarah Furlong and my Ellen can't be sisters, however, their must be a connnection somewhere with them as it can't be just a coincedence that they lived in the same place (as shown) on the 1911 Census can it? Do you have a ''Thomas Furlong'' anywhere in your Husbands ancestors?
My Ellen went on to Marry ''William Sunderland'' in 1909, they had 5 daughters-starting with the eldest)- Margaret born 1910( My Grandmother),Ellen,Mary,Bridget & Elizabeth. Ellen and William sadly parished in the Black/Spanish Flu in 1918 and all the Girls where then taken in at St Michaels Orphange in Summerhill-Co.Wexford. Such a very sad story, as my Grandmother never really spoke of her time in ''St Michaels'' until later on in her life.
My Grandmother went on to Marry my Grandfather ''Patrick Burke'' in 1929 and they lived in Ferns.Co.wexford and had 18 children (15 Alive) My mother ''Ellen'' is the 5th child born in 1938-She lives in East Sussex.
In the 1960's My Grandparents emmigrated to The UK. My Grandmother passed away in 1981 and my Grandfather in 1976.
I would love to know more about my Grandmothers Ancestors but finding it very difficult.I have got scraps & Scrapes of Info from people on here, which i am most gratefull of.
I would love to see your Family Tree.
