Hi Trish

The lower numbers of Newgate Street are business units, I believe 12 is now an Italian restaurant but I can double check for you over the weekend. When you look at the premises most of the shops look as though they have/had living quarters above them.

Hi Fred,

I just realised by your dates that my ancestors and yours would have been neighbours/had kids that played together and/or were friends :)
Thomas Purdy was born 1796 and his parents were there before that ;) and also the Reays.

A wee bit of TRIVIA on Newgate St, Morpeth.

Odd house numbers are riverside. Even numbers are on east side of street.

Today, 94 Newgate St houses the Register Office ( Now entitled "Northumberland Central" Registration District.)

I think these premises  once housed the Girls Grammar school. Am not sure cos I went to boys school up Cottingwood Lane, and never the twain were to meet !

12 Newgate St would have been some sort of commercial premises e.g. shop

 Trade Directories.
Piggot's, 1834 edition lists Thomas Purdy twice under Gardeners and Seedsmen, once at Bullers Green, once at Newgate St.

Thanks Michael :),

An interesting family. James ( my direct line) a blacksmith. Most of the others market gardeners. Son of Thomas- George had 2 sons who became Doctors and were both Director Generals of Medical Services WW1 in N.Z and Australia.

Google; John Smith Purdy, an interesting read :D

Jen, I love the photos of Old Morpeth.

Trish, Fascinating our acestors were neighbours!
You never know what will turn up on Rootschat.
Australia is a long way away from Wales, where I am now, though.
I still miss the North East of England were I was born and grew up.
They are special people, hardy and very sociable and friendly.

Michael, you are always a fund of information.

What an interest a chance enquiry has led to :)

Hi Liz (fred111)
I am currently living at 136 Newgate St.
It is a 2 bed terrace and I have recently been thinking about looking into its history.
If I can work out how I will take and try and attach a photo.
