Old Morpeth
« on: Friday 10 April 09 22:57 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
Does anyone have any information about Bullers Green?
I think it may have been a village which is now part of Morpeth.
A famous millwright, John Rastrick was born in Bullers Green in 1780.
My ancestor, James Summerville was born in Morpeth in 1796, but moved to Newcastle before 1841.
According to later censuses, some Summervilles lived in Bullers Green, so it is possible that James lived or worked in Bullers Green.
Does anyone know if  there is any evidence that there were any mills in the Bullers Green area?
Any information about mills in Bullers Green or the Morpeth area as a whole would be most welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Liz

Hi Liz,

Interesting article here, and if you click on 'older pages' at the bottom of the article, you can then click on another article about an old mill

Have a look at this map on the Northumberland Communities site http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/008528FS.htm and you can see the location of Bullers Green in the north-western corner, at the northern end of Silver Street.

This 1860 map on the same site http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/005116FS.htm indicates the presence of a 'Steam Mill (Corn)' close by.

Thats so interesting, thank you both.
I have a friend who researches, photographs, writes & gives talks about old mills,.
He will be interested too.
The famous millwright, John Rastrick lived in Newgate St  - at 136. I wonder if it is still there and near the Dyers Cottage mentioned in the article.
Many thanks again
Liz

Hi Fred

Morpeth is my home town and Buller's Green is still at the top end of Newgate Street on the road out north to Alnwick.
Newgate Street stretches away from the town centre, the number suggests this would be somewhere up towards Buller Green.
I can't think of any mills that were up that end of the town, there is certainly an old mill next to the river in the centre of town 'Oliver's Mill' - now converted like many old buildings into Apartments.

Hope this helps

Hi Morpethian :)

Welcome to Rootschat ;D

I am really interested in Morpeth in general as my Purdys are from there and Bullers Green is the address of them on 1841 Census. ( they were market gardeners)

In 1851 they were at 12 Newgate Street.

I just wondered if 12 still exists ???

Myg/g/grandfather James was born there 1828 and ended up in NZ via Australia.

Cheers,
Trish
