Burke nee Ilot
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 05:17 BST (UK) »
Ann Ilott, born Stevenage, Herts ca 1814 to Charlotte Ilott and unknown.

She married James Burke on 23 2 1840 at Parish Church, Paddington, Mx. The marriage register describes her as "spinster of 15 Harrow Rd., Paddington.

Either Ann and James or their descendants moved to Toronto. Canada would like to know when and which family members.

Do you know the names of their children and when and where they were born? When do you think they came to Canada? Do you have any information about James (where he was born and when)?

Hi Jacquie
This is what I know :
Ann Ilott do Charlotte Ilott and unknown was born in 1816 in Aston, Hrt, England - christened on 2 Mar 1816 in Aston, Hrt, England.
Ann married James Burke on 23 Feb 1840 in St James, Paddington, London, England, son of James Burke and Unknown.

James worked as a Shoemaker.

KnownChildren :
Thomas Burke was born about 1846 in Marylebone, Mdx, England

William Burke was born about 1848 in Marylebone, Mdx, England

Sarah Burke was born about 1851 in Marylebone, Mdx, England

Elizabeth Burke was born about 1852 in Marylebone, Mdx, England

Ann Burke was born on 11 Nov 1854 in Marylebone, Mdx, England and was christened on 27 Nov 1854 in Workhouse Chapel, St Marylebone, Mdx, England

I am unsure of what date they came to Canada or whether it was one of their children but I do know that descendants of James and Ann ended up in Toronto.

In the 1861 census I found them eventually, indexed as "Burth"
RG9/73 folio 7 page 11
24 Paddington Street (many families at same address)
Ann Burke, 45, widowed, laundress, b. Hertfordshire
Thomas, 14, son, light porter, b. Marylebone
William, 12, son, errand boy, b. Marylebone
Sarah, 10, dau, scholar, b. Marylebone
Elizabeth, 8, scholar, b. Marylebone

There is a possible death of an Ann Burke, aged 52, in 1867 in Marylebone (Freebmd).

In 1871:
RG10/171 44/32
22 Barne Street, Marylebone
Thomas Burke (Burks)?, 25, married, glass warehouseman, b. St Marylebone
Ellen, 34, wife b. Ireland
Anne W, 8, daughter b. St. Marylebone
Eliza, 4, daughter b. St. Marylebone
Sarah, 20, unmarried, sister, b. St. Marylebone
Ellen, 2, daughter, b. St Marylebone
(it is not clear whether Ellen is Sarah's child or another child to Thomas and Ellen).

Since the daughter Ann wasn't listed with her mother and siblings in the 1861 census entry jorose found, it is possible that she died in infancy. There are two deaths for Ann Burkes that were registered in Marylebone which could possibly be the daughter Ann - one in the third quarter of 1857 and the other in the third quarter of 1859. Otherwise, are you certain that Ann who was baptised in the Workhouse Chapel was the daughter of James Burke and Ann Ilot. Do you have a copy of the birth registration or the parish record?

On the 1871 census, there is an entry for Elizabeth Burke, 17, who was born in Marylebone, Middlesex and is working as a domestic servant in the household of John and Emily Jonas in Kensington St Mary Abbott (Piece: 55; Folio: 6; Page: 3).

Without further information on which of James and Ann children (or the descendant of which child) came to Canada, I don't know what more we can do for you. We don't even know if the name we are looking for in Canada is Burke or not since we don't know whether the daughters married in England.

Just curious, but how do you know that descendants of James and Ann ended up in Toronto?

Hi Jacquie
I've just this morning had some more information.  Family lore had the family going to Canada.

Ann and James' son William Burke was born about 1848 in Marylebone, Mdx, England.  He married Esther Cawse in 1879 in Paddington.  Esther died in 1891 in Essex but I can find no death record (as yet for William)

They had five children all born in the UK and all died in Canada:
Esther b 1880 d Toronto  m(1) Munton (2) Nicholson
Percy b 1882 Montreal c 1946 m Holt
Rose b 1884 d Toronto c 1958
Sarah Ann b 1886 d Toronto? m Eyre
Ethel Mary b 1888 d 1948 Ontario m Fowler

I'm wondering since all the children seem to have emigrated whether or not William did as well especially since I have yet to find a death record.  At this stage it would appear that Percy married in the UK but the girls married in Canada.

Hi Jorose
Thanks for that Census information.  No wonder I couldn't find them.

From what I can tell they didn't emigrate as a family. The only passenger list entry for Esther Burke that fits has her arriving on the Dominion on 17 May 1892. A note on the passenger list indicates that she was part of a group who were sent to Belleville, Ontario from workhouses in England. Here's a link to the passenger list at Library and Archives Canada:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/061g/

I found her first marriage as follows:

Esther Burke, 22, daughter of William Burke and Esther Cause married Percy Herbert Munton, 21, born Manchester, England, son of Alfred Munton and Harriet Maston on 4 Nov 1902 in Cobourg, Northumberland County, Ontario.

Here second marriage has the following information:

Esther Munton Burke, daughter of Wm Burke and Esther Munton married Alfred John Nicholson, 24, son of Alfred J Nicholson and Margaret Watson on 1 Jul 1910 in Toronto, York County, Ontario.

Looks like she did a little fibbing on that second one.

There is a passenger list entry for a Sarah Burke, 8, who arrived on the Parisian on 5 Apr 1896. She was with a group of children being sent to Stratford, Ontario. This Sarah is listed in the Home Child database at LAC. Here's a link to the passenger list at LAC:
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e148/e003680055.jpg

Here are the details of Sarah's marriage:

Sarah Ann Burke, 22, daughter of William and Esther Burke married George James Eyre, 23, son of William Isaac and Mary Ann Eyre on 8 Nov 1911 in Toronto, York County, Ontario.

There is a Percy Burke who arrived on the Sarnia on 10 April 1892. He was with a group of children who were being sent to Belleville. This Percy is listed in the Home Child database at LAC. Here's a link to the passenger list at LAC:
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e148/e003677584.jpg

I couldn't find any passenger list entries for Rose or Ethel that matched.

If you want to try to find them on the 1901 and 1911 census, here is a link to a free site that has links to the images at LAC:

Great, Thanks for that Jacquie.  The children sent out from the Workhouses, were they put to work in families or factories or both?  I guess there is some website information I will have to look up on that.
Very much appreciate your help and I will have a look on those website.
Regards
Deanne
