Tobias FURNEAUX RN
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 03:20 BST (UK) »
Apparently he was the first man to circum navigate the world, east to west and west to east - he also sailed with Captain Cook - there's a monument to him at Stoke damerel church Plymouth, and his remains were moved from Stoke Damerel to Efford cemetary
I've searched the 'Quarry' at Efford Cem..but can find no evidence.
He was unmarried and probably had no children.
I would just like to see where he's buried

Hi Caver

What are your sources that say his remains were moved from Stoke Damerel to Efford?

Im under the impression that there were no disinternments at Stoke Damerel. I know reburials occured at Efford after the Milehouse Cemetery closed, but that was quite recent, in the 60s I think.

What does the monument at Stoke Damerel Church say? Is he buried in a vault?

Graham (Plymouth, UK)

The source was a document sent to me by my brother In Australia who was researching the family tree

The Plaque is circular behind railings behind the church

It simply says the:

Tobias Furneaux RN, first man to circumnavigate the world East to west and west to east
Sailed with Captain Cook on his second voyage of adventure
Then it says: erected by the Furneaux family of Victoria Australia

There is a bit of land behind the Bus depot at Milehouse and I'm wondering if this was the site of ' Milehouse Cemetary?"

Yes - the old Milehouse Cemetery was behind the Bus depot. The Plymouth and West Devon Record Office have a number of records appertaining to the Cemetery from when it closed including MIs and photographs of headstones.

Its been a while since I visited Stoke Damerel Church. I'll see what info Ive got at home about it - as I may well have some more info on Furneaux.

Furneaux wouldnt have been buried at Milehouse.

Many thanks Graham

So - Milehouse cemetery behing the bus depot, was closed by the rector of Stoke Damerel church as it was full
This land was swapped for land adjacent to Stoke damerel church ( Where all the headstones are laid flat).
Then the Central Electricty board moved onto the site of the Milhouse cemetary and all the graves were moved to Efford
So Tobias is still buried under his plaque at Stoke damerel church.
I'm called Graham too
