Many thanks Ian,
I now know that Frederick Adolphus and laura married in the baptist chapel just 6 months before James ALLEN died. Does anyone know if there is a Baptist burial ground in or near Oxford?

Wayne this is  great I can't thank you enough. I just wonder where James and Ann ALLEN, Laura's parents were buried  It looks like Frederick Adolphus had been brought up in the Baptist faith I know James and Ann had all their children Baptised Anglican possibly because the family smithy wasconveniently opposite the Church in Steeple Barton.
So another piece has been put into this jig saw many many thanks

Now this is interesting Yesterday a fellow member sent me a report from the Wanganui Chronicle of Jan 11 1919 giving the results of Police examinations.
Among those qualifying for Senior Sergeant was:
No 801 Sergt. Frederick Adolphus WATERMAN, Ponsonby

Surely this must be one of Frederick and Ellen Laura's sons
I wonder can any one find anything more about him in NZ please

Update I have now found that FA snr married an Elizabeth Elliott in Reigate in 1872 and had a son with the same name in 1873

Can any one find them arriving in New Zealand ?
I wonder where and when Elizabeth died I can't see a death  in England and there are no Fredrick Adolphus Waterman (either 1873 or 1849)on the 1881 censuses
I know he married Laura Allen 1882 in Christchurch so he must have gone between 1873 and 1882.

How can I find out about the son's police career in New Zealand?

I think I have found the death of Elizabeth in 1873 in NZ so that closes the period of their emigration to 1876-1876
Also the death of Frederick Adolphus jnr in 1840 again in NZ

Hi Trees,

I'm pleased you've managed to track your family down.

Regarding the service record of Sergt. Frederick Adolphus WATERMAN, the resource you probably want is Police Staff Register with Nominal Index. Book 1: 1859-1927 (held on Microfilm 3348) held at the Wellington office of Archives New Zealand.

However, due to privacy concerns this film is not available to view and therefore does not appear on the Archives NZ search portal Archway. You will need to write to the Commissioner of Police requesting permission to view the file. The address is;

The New Zealand Police Headquarters
P O Box 3017
Wellington
New Zealand

Once you have written permission you can contact Archives NZ Wellington to arrange a viewing. if you've not in NZ someone here might agree to view it on your behalf and you will need to arrange this in advance with Archives NZ (not hard, don't worry).

I am going to move this topic back to the main NZ Board in case others can offer advice.
