rathlin island ancestors
« on: Tuesday 07 April 09 04:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

Am looking for ancestors who may have come to Greenock in the 1880's from Rathlin Island.

The names I am researching are James MCLEISH/MCGLEASH born c 1877 and Mary Ann MCPHAIL born c 1882. Also Ann Jane MC KILLOP born c 1855.

Can  anyone help?

Thanks.

Have moved this to County Antrim board so we can try to help you find information.

Do you think the people you are looking for were still in Ireland in 1911? If so, 1911 census for County Antrim is now online (free) and you can have a look for the names.

This could be the registration district of Ballycastle rather than the actual town of Ballycastle. Rathlin Island comes under Ballycastle registration district.

Mary and James married in 1900 in St Mary's Greenock, her father was listed as deceased.

Widow, Ann Jane McPhail, three of Mary's siblings and a Grand-daughter, Ann Jane McGee are in Greenock in 1900. Same Dalrymple Street address as given on Mary's marriage cert.

The children's ages range from 22 - 15 all reportedly born in Greenock.

Can't see this family in or around Greenock in 1881 or 1891 using search strings of M*c*a?l

There is a birth cert for Richard McPhail in Greenock in 1886, this should give the place of the parents marriage.

Ann Jane (McKillop) McPhail died in 1931 in Greenock, that should give her parents

There are no deaths of John M*c*a?l in Renfrewshire between 1885 (a year before son Richard's birth) and 1900 (when Mary marries).

Since John and Ann Jane were married after statutory records were kept in Ireland, the certificate from 1868 will have both father's names. Church records, if extant, may name both sets parents.

Loads of Rathin families lived in Dalrymple Street I'd be VERY interested to hear what you find out about this family.

From the Greenock Telegraph:

Richard McPhail died at 18 Dalrymple Street, Greenock on 12th March 1912 (Greenock Telegraph 13.3.1912)

John McPhail, died at 24 Dalrymple Street, Greenock on 17th January 1899 age 54 - wife Ann Jane (Greenock Telegraph 17.01.1899)

Death cert on Scotlandspeople.gov.uk

GROS 564/02/0025

So that should have his parents

John McPhail's parents were Charles McPhail (listed as a Butcher on the Death cert and Labourer on the Marriage Cert) and Margaret McKay (another common Rathlin Name).

Ann Jane (McKillop) McPhail's parents were Archibald a quarryman and Ann McLaughlin (a couple with these names married in Ramoan in 1833).

As I said, I can't find John or Ann Jane in 1881 or 1891. But at 24 Dalrymple Street in 1881 there is a John McKay
