Book- Burgess and Guild Brethren Glasgow 1751-1846 Completed
« on: Monday 06 April 09 12:51 BST (UK) »
Update: I found my own answers- the B & GB book is online and the Sheriff Court Books are on FHL microfilm.

This seems to be a very hard book to find. Does anyone have access to it and can lookup the listing for my 5th Great Grandfather? (UMPHERSTOUN, James 1760). I have notes from an older family historian that he is listed in this book published in the 1920's or 1930's by the Scottish Record Society.

A also have the 1797 will for James' wife and reference is made to a "Bond of Provision" granted by her father William to her (Catherine Matthie-Umpherstoun) dated 1752 and registered in the "Sheriff Court Books for Lanarkshire, Glasgow" in 1785. Where would this be located? National Archives, perhaps?

Thank you.

Hi Lanarman,

Just came across your post - can you tell me the name of the website where you found the Burgess and Guild Brethren of Scotland online?

Many thanks!  :)

Hi jmacg:

The webpage is here:

http://www.archive.org/index.php

Go to "texts" and then "advanced search". Insert "Scottish Record Society" in the creator box. You will get a wealth of scans of original Scottish Record Society transcripts including:

1. Volume 43-- The Burgesses and Guild Brethren of Glasgow 1573-1750. (Vol 93 seems to be a duplicate).
2. Volume 51-- The Burgesses and Guild Brethren of Glasgow 1751-1846.
3. Volume 46-- The Burgesses and Guild Brethren of Edinburgh 1406-1700.
4. Volume 53-- The Burgesses and Guild Brethren of Edinburgh 1761-1841.
5. Volume 47-- Register of Edinburgh Apprentices 1666-1700.

Other volumes hold transcripts of parish registers, etc. A GREAT online resource.
Good luck.
