Baltimore, Cemetery Tullagh
« on: Sunday 05 April 09 00:31 BST (UK) »
Hello,

23 February, 1896, bur. at Baltimore, co. Cork   Henry Richard Marmion, ... J.P. for co. Cork.

I can only find the cemetery 'Tullagh' at Baltimore, but no address or how to contact them.  Would it be connected with a church? I can't find what churchs are there. If anyone knows the parish name?
I believe Henry was with the Church of Ireland.
If anyone can advise me how to contact either, or any other cemeteries of Baltimore, I will write to each.
I would like to find his grave and eventually a photo of it.
Thank you so much,   in California,   Katie

Hi KT

Tullagh is, as far as I'm aware, the only cemetery in Baltimore. Both Catholic and Church of Ireland are buried there. It's quite a bleak graveyard, built around the ruins of the church, running down to the water's edge, so some of the inscriptions haven't survived the battering of wind and salt. However, new burials are continuing there, so you should be able to get info about Henry Marmion's grave from the local authority in whose care the graveyard will be.

I imagine the local authority office would be at Skibbereen but I'm not sure exactly where to direct you. Why don't you try the Skibbereen Heritage Centre? In my experience the staff there are extremely helpful and I think they'd be able to advise you by email via their website: www.skibbheritage.com.

If all else fails, pm me.

You might be interested to know that Henry Marmion was a huge figure in Skibberren, not just on account of being a JP.  An obituary was published on 29 Feb 1896 in the Southern Star newspaper. You can access it at:
www.irishnewsarchives.com. (24 hours access to the archive costs 10Euros.)

Good luck.

Hi KT

Tullagh graveyard is in the care of Cork County Council, apparently. I've pm'd you the mobile number of the person who should be able to help you.

Hi there,

I was looking for the name of this cemetery as I have most if not all the Driscoll headstones photographed from a recent visit to Baltimore. I see you have O'Driscolls in you interest list. Would like to make contact. Mine left during the famine to London. I now live in Auckland, New Zealand

Hi KT,
Henry Marmion is buried in the old graveyard at Tullagh, Baltimore. I don't know the exact location of his grave or if it is marked. However he is mentioned on the Marmion gravestone at Creagh graveyard. Creagh is located about 4 miles from Baltimore. I have attached a photo of this gravestone, which reads:

In Memory of your grandparents.
Henry Richard Marmion
Died 23 Feb 1896. Age 80
Interred at Tullough
Grace Elizabeth Marmion
Died 22 Feb. 1932. Age 91
Their children
Rose Mary Marmion
Died 9 Sep. 1911. Age 34
Interred at Chamba India
Reginald Pat Marmion
Died 24 July 1935. Age 55
Philip Henry Marmion
Died 28 Aug 1935. Age 61
May they rest in peace

regards,
William Casey

WCasey,

I am such a SCHMUCK, I didn't realize how long its been since I've come back to Rootschat.  We moved last winter a few miles to another town & I got off track about things.  NO excuse, but that's what happened.  I apologize I didn't reply sooner.  I just opened your Wonderful note with the beautiful photo a minute ago.  I can see &  read everything on it clearly, plus having your transcription.

YES. this is the stone I have been looking for.  It's lasted in great condition. I have since found a wonderful genalogy site for the Clan Marmion.  Would you mind if I share this with them, & I will credit you for it.  I had given up finding it, figuring mother nature or man's 'progress' had taken or destroyed it.

I live in Rohnert Park, California, which is about 1-2 hours north of San Francisco.  If I can do anything for you over here, just ask  ;D

Warmest Regards, Katie

Hi Katie,

No need to apologise. I fully understand that how time slips by. I'm delighted that this is the headstone you were looking for and that I could be of some help. I have no problem with you sharing the photo with anyone else.

William

Thanks William,

I have a lovely letter from Philip John Marmion, who is quite elderly now.  He is the son of Philip Henry Marmion on the bottom of the stone.  This is such a lovely photo.  I want to print and send it over to him.  He lives in Surrey.

Best Regards always,  from California,  Katie
