McGeaughery Family
« on: Saturday 04 April 09 16:23 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have found that my husband has Irish blood!  However my problem is what the spelling of the name.  I have found them on the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census living in Durham on each census they spell their name differently McGeaughey, McGaffey and McGeaughery.

Anyone any idea as to which if any of these is the correct spelling?

Thanks

Jan

Hi

Meant to say on the 1911 census they say they are from Bangor County Down or Cotton County Down

Thanks

Jan,
Of your various spellings I can find one Margaret McGaffey who was married in 1868 in Warrenpoint Presbyterian Church, Newry District. Are you sure that the name could not be McCaffrey, which is much more common in the North of Ireland.

Hi

Thanks for the help!

I found George and Margaret's marriage details on IFHF online yesterday.  It has given me Margarets surname as Simple her father being Samuel a farmer.  George's name is spelt McGaughey and his father was Alexander (the name of George's eldest son) who was a labourer.  They were married on 30 March 1866 at Ballygraney Church.

However I can't find their children but I suppose I should count myself lucky to have found that.

Regards

Jan

Having just said I can't find the children I have found their eldest daughter Ellen Jane McGaughey on the IGI.

It says that Margaret's surname is Semple.
