This is a very odd photo. I've seen some mixed messages in photos before but I think this one takes the gold medal

The girl in the photo, with her v-shaped bodice and dropped shoulder, center-parted hair and ringlets, has certainly got an 1860s look to her.
But the woman's blouse is very definitely not from that era...the big sleeve with the long tight wrist didn't come along until the 1900s.
The overall look of the picture is old, the deep sepia tones...old, old.
But the pose, with the woman's arm around the girl and smiling! Modern. Unheard of in the 1860s. The square plinth beside the woman, quite a 1900s look.
I have to admit I'm totally confused by this one...it's like someone is trying to mess with my head

But I think when you have a mishmash like this one, you have to go with the most modern element. People in photos can be wearing an older style of clothing, but unlikely to be wearing a fashion that hasn't come along yet.
I haven't seen a single example of that sleeve any earlier than the early 1900s. It's a very long wrist and distinctive.
Just a thought, what country are we dealing with...?
Cheers,
a confused China
