Melbourne General Cem. 1890...is there a list?

Hello, 
     I've just received the death certif. of my gggrandmother Jane Bassett nee Cray, who died in 1890, and it states that she was buried at the Melbourne General Cem.  I've looked online, and there seems to be no listing for the cemetery next to the Melbourne Uni...but lists for Springvale and I think from memory, St Kilda Cem, as I take it, these were also known as Melbourne Cems around that time.  Jane died at Richmond.
Apart from taking an elephant gun and a packed lunch for 4 days, and walking up and down the rows and rows of graves, is there any way of finding the site of a grave and it's number at the cem near the Uni....the phone book doesn't have any contact number to ring, or a service referral for finding a grave....anyone out there with any ideas how would be the best way to find this grave?

...I couldn't see 'Jane Bassett' on the 'Necropolis' (Melbourne cemeteries) site...but there's a 'Contact' button ....you could enquire from them.  Also ..the VIC State Lbrary has an 'Ask a Librarian' service (on-line) ..they MAY be able to find out for you.   ....Valerie (WA)

Hi Rap,

You can phone Melb. Gen. Cem. on 9349-3014. The office is open everyday except Sunday and the gates are open 7 days from 9-5pm. Give the name you are searching and they will look up the exact location immediately. If you require a map with the grave marked, they will post it to you. Very helpful.

Many thanks for your information Valerie and Magoo....I'll get right on to it...a phone number is exactly what I had been looking for.  It would be wonderful if someone could list names for online searches; I know that there are many cems. on line and this is a great help...what a huge job though...maybe when I retire!

There is information on the MI's at Melbourne General cemetery [not online]   Jane BASSETT does not have a headstone.

     I've phoned the Cem. and was given a gravesite number...what a pity that she doesn't have a headstone...her son-in-law, daughter  and grand-daughter are buried in the same grave according to the woman on the phone. (they were Henry Josephine and Eliza Brayn)  I think that I will still visit the site..it means a lot to me.  I've found the families of Jane's sisters in Scotland, and would like to send them a photo of the plot anyway. Jane left Scotland for Australia as a 19 year old girl in 1852.

Yes I agree....I always have my fingers crossed when searching for headstones.....and especially for others   I have been disappointed many times but then so excited if someone [usually a kind 'chatter] has managed to find one of my ancestor's graves in the UK....and if the headstone is legible...icing on the cake
