Tollerfield
« on: Friday 03 April 09 11:17 BST (UK) »
I was really stuck with John Tollerfield b1824 but thanks to previous replies I have been able to go back as as far as his grandparents who I beleive were called John Tollerfield and Elizabeth ???? (same names as his parents)but I do not know any dates.

If anyone could help me anymore it would be great.

My resources for research are limited as I am housebound but this is what i have so far:-

John Tollerfield b1824 Church Knowle dorset had a brother and two sisters (Elizabeth b1831 dorest, Job b1827 Moreton dorset, Charlotte b???? dorset)
Parents were John Tollerfield b.1791 corfe castle, dorset & Elizabeth (Unknown) b.1793 Warmwell, Dorset
Grandparents John Tollerfield b???? & Elizabeth (unknown) b?????

I think this information is correct, it is hard to find as there are many variations on the spelling of Tollerfield as I am sure you have also found.

Thank you for reading this

Karen  ;D

Hi Karen,

Have you had any luck with the  Dorset Parich Council site?

http://www.opcdorset.com/

The Church Knowle information looks fairly comprehensive, and also neighbouring villages.

Hi Spring

Yes, never knew that site existed and its great.
I managed to find his parents through that but when it come to his grandparents thats where I stop, because I dont know any dates I am not sure which John is correct.

It does appear all the Tollerfield are linked, so beacuse of this I have been on Ancestry and found a tree from a distant Tollerfield  and have been able to add distant cousins etc...

I will keep looking though, I am not quitter and once I have got the bit between my teeth I wont give in.

Thanks again

Karen

Had a look at the Corfe Castle baptisms as it is the nearest village to Church Knowle, and the transcriptions are equally good (although surnames are not in heavy type)

Baptisms for 1791 25th December John son of John and Elizabeth Tollifield.

It might be worth producing  a Tree working downwards, from the earliest references to the name.

P.s sorry, just noticed that you seem to have the Corfe castle connection!

Hi Karen,

I have found Tollerfield is one of the more difficult names in the area. :)

Are you sure you have the right John? There was also one baptised in Langton Matravers (Tollyfield) 20 Apr 1824, also of a John and an Elizabeth. It seems likely that he had an elder sister Mary baptised 15 Apr 1821, same place.

I have a small cluster of Tollerfields in my tree from the Corfe area but no direct connection with your John.

From my notes you may wish to search in the Dorset OPC for:

Tolerfield
Tollifield
Tollefield
Tollfield
Tolefield
Tollyfield
Tolleyfield
Tollofield - added

Others that could be confused:

Tolleville
Tolliville

I have collected BMDs from the Dorset OPC for 5 miles around Corfe Castle. If you PM me with your e-mail address I could send you a list of possibles for you to consider.

Hi Karen,

Take a look in the 1851 for John (transcribed Tollfield on Ancestry).

HO107/1856/543/11

This may not be yours but it looks like the one baptised at Langton Matravers I mentioned. Intriguingly he is a Tailor too. He is with his parents John and Elizabeth. Here his father John is aged 60 born Corfe Castle which matches a baptism 25-Dec 1791 in Corfe of parents John and Elizabeth (the one Springbok mentioned earlier).

If the birthplace of (Church) Knowle in the 1881 census is incorrect then everything else matches with what you've got. Parents, grandparents, occupation and date of birth. I wonder if it will ever be possible to prove it.

Has anyone else got any ideas how we could resolve this?

Hi

Can anyone help me this this question:-

I know John Tollerfield (Tollifield)b1824 married Ellen Hennessy on 07 Aug 1864 at St Mary, Dover, Kent, England as I have a copy of the marriage cert and I alsoknow he was a tailor.

This is where my query starts, on the OPC for Moreton for 1845 it shows a marriage of a John Tollifield marrying a Elizabeth Maria King and it says John is a Tailor, I am wondering if this is the same John and if he Ellen was his second wife.

If anyone can shed some light on this it would be a great help.

Thanks

Karen

Hi again Karen,

If the marriage certificate coming up an Ancestry is the one you have then notice that John is described as 'Widower' on it. It certainly seems likely that this other marriage you've found is his first.

Sorry, I should have noticed that the first time I saw it.
