All very puzzling re General Service Corps. This site has a GSC cap badge "1908/1935". http://www.britisharmedforces.org/pages/nat_badges_corps2.htm

That is a helmet plate, at the very least or a General List officers bronzed badge that has been buffed a little too much!!

They do have some very odd descriptions on there!! :o

He doesn't mention The General List..... ::)

Ooops! True!  :-[

The only other one I can think of is the Manchesters!  ???

No probs!!  ;) ;D

The Madchesters as I also said.... ;)

....have the Corporation Arms, as opposed to the Royal Coat of Arms that we have here...

Right oh...

After much scratching of head, and delving into my books...

The chap in question is a Volunteer for the WW1 National Guard. A form of WW1 Home Guard. In the early war they were local Citizen Defence Corps, and also known as Volunteer Training Corps. By wars end they had becoma attached to regular army units, and had been equipped with a full uniform a la the rest of the army. The cap badge worn was...The Coat of Arms...

Solved!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Nice one Scrimnet. Is it possible to make any assumptions about the 4 seargents? i.e did they serve together?  Would they have been performing some administrative duties together? (I suspect thet this may have been RW May's role as he was a hotel manager in civilian life) were they 4 strangers pulled together for a photo?

Probably x4 mates from a town /village....The "mystery" chap (as was!) would NOT have served abroad...Home only.

Ergo the pic must have been taken whilst the other x3 were on leave... ;)

They could have been serving together at a UK depot perhaps. No medal card for RW May so probably no overseas service.

The NG / Volunteers were attached to th "regular" army units by wars end, so yes could be the PS/ DS from around a depot, or the such like...

Phil,

The owner of this  web page (dedicated to Frederick J Boyes) might like a copy of the "corporal" photo http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~brett/photos/fjboyes.html
