« on: Thursday 02 April 09 22:39 BST (UK) »
Hi, asking for help?  I am searching for my family people EGAN PATRICK, 1790  his wife Bridget KELLY/KEIRLY 1796  Both born Ireland. OFFLAY?  It has been suggested ,that they may of went to USA before coming out to Australia in 1840s. They arrived  with 3 or 4 young children the eldest being Bridget, who married my family person  THOMAS PAIN/PAYNE from ENGLAND .The EGANS settled in ADELAIDE  SOUTH AUSTRALIA, Tom and Bridget married in 1850 Adelaide, then moved to outback MENINDEE NSW, so did Bridgets parents.  CAN someone help me please find  the EGANS family background? tried lookups from IRELAND.... no results,  I know this is a big ask as i do not know where to start in America. Thanks   SANDRA

Considering you've just posted an Egan thread on Co. Offaly board today there's hardly been a chance for replies yet.

Hi Sanz,

There are plenty of Aussies here (including me!) seeking info, they're not sick of us yet!!  ;D

I think perhaps that aghadowey was trying to point out that you have a similar request on an Ireland board, and she didn't want people being unaware of that request and any replies it might get, in case they double up on efforts or information for you on the USA board.  That's all  :)

Good luck with the search!

Cheers

The reason that you've not had much information on your Irish thread is that you have no idea where in Ireland the family came from. To search for Irish relatives you need to know their religion and where they lived (parish if not townland) not just the county or 'Ireland.' Also, you are looking for records from 1840s or earlier and civil registration started in 1864 for births, deaths and Catholic marriages (from 1845 for other marriages).
To search for the Egans in America you will probably need to find where they lived (state at least). If they went to Australia in the 1840s there might also be few available American records.

Sandra, I think you should take a different tack with your enquiry (you might have tried this already; I haven't checked):  as the latest event for your Egans was their immigration to Australia, try a post on the Australia board, with all the information you have about when they arrived, all the names of everyone who came out, where they went to, the ship etc etc. - anything you have.

If we can find some arrival information for the family, we might be very lucky and find out something about where they embarked from, and possibly even where they originated.  You never know - some of the assisted immigrant records are really good about recording information.

As aghadowey says, it's really hard to find anything in Ireland unless you have quite specific information about where a person came from.  Even when you know that, you may not find out anything else, as is the case with my own Irish families!

Cheers

It has been suggested ,that they may of went to USA before coming out to Australia in 1840s.

What information do you have that they went first to the US?  Any idea what state?  Any of the children born in the US?  It won't be easy to find them in the US without knowing the state and the early censuses are not very informative [before 1850 only the head of household named].  Early shipping records not good either.
