Hollywood Family Kilmarnock Ayrshire
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 18:16 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone, hope you are all well?

I have been looking into my family tree for sometime and helping find information for my Grandmother who is 84, I have found lots of information on her maternal side but hitting a brick wall on her fathers side. This is the info I have at the moment

Sarah Hollywood b. 1925 Kilmarnock
Father - John Hollywood b. 1877 Coalminer Kilmarnock he died when my grandmother was very young
Mother - Sarah Wyllie b. 1882 d. 1936 Domestic Servant Kilmarnock, I have traced this side back to 1750

This was both their second marriage, on their wedding certificate 1922 it states Patrick Hollywood and Sarah McGinnis as John's parents. Looking at scotlandspeople website I have found a marriage certificate for a Patrick Hollowood Iron Miner and Sarah McGinnes Mill Worker married Dalry Ayr 1864. In then states Patricks parents as a James Hollowood Labourer and Mary McNeill. Sarah's parents are stated as a John McGinnes and Mary McGuire.

Although my Nana has always said she is Scot through and through, I have a feeling her paternal side is Irish as I have found reference to a Patrick Hollowood in the 1871 and 1881 Census as a Iron Miner living in Ayrshire born Ireland, and it does make sense that Hollowood would have maybe been changed to Hollywood to make the name sound more Scottish the same with McGinnis and McGinnes, at a time when thousands of Irish came to Ayrshire to find work in the 19th C? Or I could be completely wrong!

If anyone can help point me in the right direction in tracing the Hollywood family or information regarding Irish migration to Scotland that would be fantastic.

Look forward to hearing from you  :)

Hi Adil

I have a Helen Hollywood in my family tree. Hollywood was her maiden name, and she married Patrick Woods. They probably came from Co. Armagh, as her daughter Mary states this in the census' of 1891. Helen was born c. 1812, and her parents were James Hollywood and Catherine Comesky. She died in Kilmarnock 1882.

Hope this helps
