Johnson family Belford
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 17:04 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information on the Johnson family who lived and worked in the Belford area. The earliest record I have is Adam Johnson 1784 born Belford his wife was Jane ? born Ancroft 1788. the family were non conformist which makes finding details of birth and marriages difficult. Adam's son Samuel abt. 1811 was my GG Grandfather.

Belford Scotch Church Baptisms 1776-1848

Samuel Johnson born 3 Sept 1811, baptised 15 Sept 1811 son of Adam and Jane Johnson of Easington, Belford Parish

Jane Johnston born 25 feb 1814 daughter of Adam and Jane Johnson of Belford Town and Parish

Margaret Johnstone born 6 April 1809, baptised 16 April 1809 daughter of Adam and Jane Johnstone of Easington, Belford Parish

John Johnstone born 2 or 6? th Jan 1808, baptised 1 Feb 1808 son of Adam and Jane Johnstone of Easington, Belford Parish

Sorry no occupations or mother's maiden name.  Several other Johnson/Johnston families in the area also.  One having a son named Adam maybe they were all related.

Many Thanks

I didn't have a date of birth for Samuel so that is very helpful. I know there are a lot of Johnson's in the area and sometimes the name is spelt in different ways.

I too am searching for Johnsons in Northumberland. They were quite large families and spread across Northumberland.

Last week my Father and I spent some time whizzing around Belford, Ancroft, Norham and Carham. In Ancroft and Norham churches they have copies of the burials registers available for the public to look at in black A4 folders with the plot locations and maps, saves so much time being able to go straight to a grave without having to wander about row by row.

I know many of my Johnsons were non-conformist too, they certainly knew how to be difficult eh?! ;D

Are you aware of the Bishops Transcripts which are online and currently available to look at free of charge? It is a pilot scheme at the moment.

Lots of stuff to look at there with Marriages, baptisms and deaths. I have found it to be a very useful resource, though time consuming to trawl through.

Best of luck with your research.

The Johnsons certainly don't make things easy, apart from being non conformist the name is spelt in so many different ways. I have got stuck on Adam 1784. Have trawled through a lot of the transcripts but could do with the Belford entries which aren't on line yet.
I notice one of your names is Rutherford , my GG Grandmother was a Rutherford from Chatton in Northumberland.
